An idea for Pool

Perhaps what pool needs is to SHOW the public a little hustling and some good pool too. The "Legends of Pool' that Jay promoted in the past is a perfect example. Most of the public may have watched it somewhat but I'll bet the highest ratings were when Willie played Fats. Why? Because Willie was the best and Fats was a loudmouth and a hustler. (who could also shoot some great pool in his day). Why not promote a show such as: "Hustlers vs Pro's, For all the Dough". When poker took off everybody was having Texas Hold em tournaments. Why? Because like a previous poster related, it's cool to smoke a stogie and play cards for money with the boys. Everyone thought they were going to be the next champ. What man doesn't think that winning a game of pool for some dough isn't cool. Whether it's the business man at happy hour after work or the neighbors playing in the basement for two bucks a game. Maybe they'd watch a show like this because they could relate to it. Picture a re-match of Earl vs Kid Delicious, both being encouraged to speak their mind during play. Or how about "old school vs new school". Rempe, Sigel, Balukas playing today's pros. Then your drawing viewers from 2 different generations. Ah, just an idea.............. ;)

Problem is no one outside of the pool world knows who "Earl" is. You'd be preaching to the choir. More people know "Fast Eddie, " a fictional character, than Earl. Hollywood has always had the ability to make heros, and ALL sports need heros. A film about Mosconi would create lots of interest in pool. People love films about freakish talent (Mozart, Good Will Hunting, The Express - all really about people freakishly good at one thing - I'm sure there are other examples). Imagine a film about Willie that starts his dad closing the room for the night and locking up the balls and cues. Then 6 y.o. Willie throws some potatoes on the table and starts knocking them in with a broom stick. Somewhere between there and his run of 526 the film would have great scenes in Allingers and the other great halls of the 20's and 30's, etc. Good costumes. Great period piece. His second wife knew the day she met him that they would be married. Women eat that stuff up. They'd use current pros as extras in the film. Only problem is that Willie did not have one single defining moment. No climax. But Hollywood can take care of that. It isn't about accuracy - its about capturing greatness. People go for that. I do.

Yeah, people always mention what we need is a really good pool film to pick up interest and I agree. Just read the "Cornbread Red" story. Man, what a movie that would make!
