Analogy of Pool and Music

If cue sports were compared to musical genre's I'd have to make the following analogies:

Snooker would be Classical music.
Think about it. They tend to wear Tuxedo's and nice clothes, the audience claps politely on the breaks, and it's well respected in general. On a more abstract comparison, both snooker and classical music emphasize technical ability, and are very traditional and strict in their training.

Nine ball would be Rock and Roll.
It's the "new" kid on the block (relatively speaking). It's fast, loose, and flashy. Lot's of style and wild shots. Crazy combo's riding the nine mimic distorted sustain blaring from a Marshall stack. There's a good rhythm to nine ball too though, and once your in that groove, it's feels good.

One Pocket would definitely be Jazz.
Both are slower paced in general, with occasional quick eight and outs that mirror wild musical runs of cats like Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley. One hole is relatively simple in it's rules, but allows for creativity more than almost any other cue sport. The common music enthusiast finds it hard to get into jazz, but the real music lovers know where it's at. The same can be said about one pocket.

Eight ball would be today's Top 40.
Relatively straight-forward and confined by a narrow set of rules and guidelines. Nothing genius often occurs in the Top 40 or eight ball for that matter, but it appeals to the masses. It's enjoyable to play, much like the easy listening music you here on the mainstream radio stations.

What would carom billiards be... Avant Garde? How about Straight Pool?? Lol, please feel free to share your thoughts whether you agree with my analogies or not!

Straight pool would be lounge music

One pocket would be lullaby's

3Cushion/Carom Jazz

I think 9 Ball would be Jazz: fast and loose, creative, totally western in origin.
8 Ball would be all kinds of Rock, popular, widely played, no one set of recognized rules.
I'll have to think about the rest

Excellent analogy very eloquently composed.

You all forgot one...trick shots.

With the young and innovative trick-shot artists now on the scene, I would have to
say trick shots would be (some form) of techno music.

I agree with your other takes.

One pocket would have to be silence in my view. Sat there, all alone in a room with nothing but 4 walls to look at. Hang on, nah, that's too much fun for one pocket.

Its closest comparison would be the sounds around an old folks home. The crunching of Larry biting on his cracker, Mary coughing chronically whilst she knits, Dennis passing wind like a champion, the sound of dominoes rattling on the table. Not only is this a close comparison of one pocket, the people mentioned are the ones that play it. They're too old to handle the excitement any other variation of pool has to offer.

I agree with you on 8ball. You could say 9 ball is like jazz if it's big band jazz i suppose. The reason why I chose that for one pocket is that it is less structured and straight forward. Nineball is connect the dots. It's checkers compared to the chess aspect of 1p. In this regard, I find it more abstract, whereas nineball is a bit obvious.

There have been a couple good suggestions so far. I completely forgot about trickshots, or "artistic pool".... Maybe I have a selective memory.
