Another 8-ball Cuetable Layout

I had a similar scenario as below come up for me the other day. I'm solids and my opponent under-estimated the trouble he was in as stripes. When he deliberately allowed me back to the table, without hesitation I began firing away and ran out.

I'm sure many of you will see it immediately but I guess my point is to get others to think outside the box a little.

CueTable Help

I would take the 5 in the corner, the 6 in the top side, the 7 in the top left corner and bank the 8 cross side. The 15 ball makes the side pokcet a lot bigger. That is my immediate reaction on how to play it. What did you do?

what I see

I was driven to post this, based on your "most of you will see it immediately" comment. I don't even see the diagram immediately! Nothing against cuetable, just showing what you'll see if you do not use MacOS or "Windows". Oh, and of course you can't download a suitable plugin.

I'm thinking 5-6-7-8, but without seeing it on an actual table, it's hard to say whether I'd try ti break out the 8 off the first shot using inside english off the 5, or if I'd play the 5-6 clean, draw back a touch off the 7, and bank the 8 by the 15. The upside to that approach is that the 15 makes the side pocket much bigger. The 10 appears to be just far enough away from the 8 to let the CB get away from the double-kiss, but then stop it dead.

I think the pattern is farily obvious...

I am guessing the first thing you looked at was how big that side pocket is with the 15 ball right there....and how far off the rail the 8-ball was and/or how "ON" the bank on the 8 was going to be using your 7-ball is the set up ball.

What are you logging in with? A Commodore 64?

Yeah, perhaps this was too obvious. It was fun, though. My opponent was a pretty decent player and didn't see it coming. He figured the 8-ball was tied up.

thanks

Well, what are you using? Linux? If so, http://www.ubuntux.org/shockwave-player-ubuntu-linux

Thanks, I will look into this later. I'm doubt I will get decent performance, or if it will even run on my current laptop
which is only 750Mhz/256MB(RAM) but I will look into it for sure.

It could be a hell of a lot easier, than to continue work on the JAVA diagrammer I shelfed.

EDIT: By the way, I'm way back on Redhat 9 (outdated) for many reasons. :)

That's just the first solution I found, you might find more options that have a tighter performance footprint if you search google for "linux shockwave" (without the quotes).

And in my experience, pretty much anything offers better performance than Java GUI applications (which I develop as part of my job).

Well I'm not genius at this, but fwiw, 5, 6, 7, bank the 8.
Now I'll go see what the people who know what they're doing said.

CueTable Help

I think this is one of those that comes under the "kissing your great aunt" category. Bank the 8-ball. You may not want to. You're not looking forward to it. But it in the end, you have to.

I know I'm getting this thread off track, so I'll try to make this the last post regarding cuetable and compatibility.

I tried the older "crossover" solution, perhaps the new one would work, but it would be slow, and cost money,
even if I did invest the time.

The reason I was persuing a JAVA based solution, was so just about EVERYONE could use it. And, as far
as JAVA being slow(er), yes you are correct for the most part. I worked for about a year optimizing the
fastest JAVA environment ever created, which did not need an underlying OS (SavaJe). It was virtually
as fast as executing native code!

And, I've also spent a couple months optimizing and porting the Adobe Shockwave player itself under contract!

But you are correct never-the-less, in the general case.

EDIT: OH YEH, my SavaJe jacket was great for sharking in regional/open tournaments.
Folks thought I was some visiting foreign player, since no one had ever heard of, or seen the logo before. :)

He said "most" right? Not "all"?

I can appreciate your situation, but it's hardly Jude's (or anyone elses) problem that you're choosing to use a non-standard OS and/or browser. You are doing that for your own reasons but you must know there are limitations associated with such decisions...

You make it sound like such a weighty decision, like taking drugs or something. :)

I'm curious -

Just to change things around. I mean, it's pretty obvious solids has a HUGE advantage here. What would you do to start turning the tide if you were stripes?

thanks Jude

Thanks Jude :)

Now, it's been quite a while since I played 8-ball (what year?), and I forget the rules. I'm not sure why he turned over the table to you.

Are you saying he made his last shot and voluntarily left you this layout? (As opposed to trying to get out or safe you?)

EDIT: By the way, now everyone is going to blame ME for the fact the thread stretches off the screen. :)

Yeah, he completely didn't see me banking it. I mean, to his credit, I'm sorta feeding you guys here. I say, "Hey, I got out from here. Look at the diagram and see how" and you automatically hunt for the out. When you're in the middle of a game, you look at things differently. You see the tied up 8-ball and figure you're getting another turn at the table. He's also focusing on stripes and not considering how to run with solids. He sees a problems and dismisses my chances.

Something to consider, had the 7-ball not been there, this becomes a much tougher table to run.

Given the position of the CB I think I'd be cutting the 11 softly onto the the 6 pushing it to the rail as close to the 14 as possible. OR and I think this is much riskier, I'd kick the 10 up to the 8. Speed for this shot very difficult to judge.

There isn't a clear run out here for stripes so your going to have to duck and take your chances. It doesn't look good for stripes.
