Another Small Local Tournament in ATL. More fun and $$ for you & friends!

I don't think it will fail either. What I am saying is it will help to destroy open events in your area. Here is a scenario of how and why.

The pool room starts doing HCP events on Fridays and they become successfull then they start doing them on another day with the same success. The other locations in the area try to compete and start doing HCP events in their rooms. Then all of a sudden it seems that most events in your area are doing them. At the same time this trend is booming the participation in open events dwindles down, then they start to die out.

Then the next time the pool room wants to do a larger open event nobody wants to play because they don't want to try and compete with better players.
Now the pool room owner is discouraged with open events and doesn't want to hold them anymore and neither will anyone else in the area.

Hence, the demise of open events and larger money added events in your region.

I can hear the story now..... LET'S JUMP 5 YEARS INTO THE FUTURE.

Yeah, I remember when pool used to be good around here in ATLANTA.
There were plenty of good tournaments and many with big money added but then they started doing these HCP events.................

It's the same old story. I've heard and even witnessed it several times.

Right now, pool is awesome in your region ! Please try to capitalize on it by hosting better or more interesting styles of events. NOT by having handicapped events. It's an extremely great possibillity that pool will get even better in your region in the future if you follow the lessons learned from other areas.

Mj
Well not in this town because a few years back when there were handicapped events at every pool hall basically in metro Atlanta, the open events were doing much better than they are doing now. There were big weekly handicapped tournaments at Sharkeys, Side Pockets, Mr. Cues 2, Atlanta Billiards, Tara Billiards, Kennesaw Billiards, and Cherokee Billiards. Only Cues handicapped event is still going but when all of these weekly tournaments were going on the regional events were doing well down here. Those tournaments had awesome pots, great action, and good player auctions. The payouts were $500+ for first down to a couple hundred for first. When these tournaments were going on there were many more pool players out and about all the time as well. There are so many people quitting the game now because there's no money in it and that there's no excitement in it anymore.

So when all of Atlanta was running handicapped tournaments the tours were stronger. How is it going to change now?

Have been there and done that.

Hey guys, just wanted to let fellow ATL'ers and traveling folk know that starting in January 2006, there will very possibly be another money tournament at The Pool Room in Marietta. From the looks of it, the weekly tournament will be a handicapped 9-ball event with the possibility of running a players auction. This is just to provide another opportunity for people to enjoy this growing competitive sport even more (and maybe pay off a few late bills? =P)

John and I are looking to run it on Wednesday or Friday night (not sure yet) with a great big possibility of additional cash added! If any of you players have any suggestions or simply want to impart some wisdom about the idea, please respond because we want to make this the best running weekly tournament ever! Hope to hear from you guys!

My Best,

Angelo

Hey Angelo,
A few years back, per the request of Robert, "Owner of Kennesaw Billiards, who offered +$100 per event....After a month of thought and design. I accepted with modifcations.
HC tournaments are a pain in the A__ to run, as there is always someone complaning about another persons HC.
Will talk with you in more detail this comming Sat/Sun at "The Pool Room I", I'll be sitting near table #9.

"Have a nice day",

Is this the Angelo I met through Katie a few weeks ago?

I just moved to Atlanta recently and immediately noticed that there are no open weekly tournaments (other than the 8 Ball one at the Poolroom in Duluth). The Monday night HCP tourney at Mr. Cues gets a pretty good turnout, but I have to say that I'm with Mike. Go with an open weekly! This is coming from someone who is not a favorite to cash or win one of them.

I really believe that with all of the HCP tournaments around, pool is becoming the only sport that does not reward players who have put in their time, money and effort and also discourages players from getting any better.

How about a HCP entry fee for weaker (C and D) players? Where else can you play a great player for cheap?

Just my two cents....

Awesome! Seems like I'm getting more and more ATL folks involved with this idea. So far, everyone's been pushing for an open event and from my experience, an open event just doesn't work that well at the Pool Room in Marietta. Now, if it was in Duluth, they might get a bigger showing but not in Marietta as they used to run a $13 open 9-ball event that eventually got axed in favor for an open 8-ball tourny. Even now, not that many people come out to play.

Hey alice! Yea its me, the same Angelo that you met through Katie.
Lamar, I'll be very happy to meet with you.

The PR in Marietta has an open 9 ball on Sundays, and open 8 ball on Saturdays and Mondays. All of those events are straight race formats. No A players allowed. Im not sure about The PR 2 in Duluth's tournaments.

Hey Angelo,
Just to let you know the monday nite tourn at Pool Room I,
started as a 7-Ball tourn & was changed to 9-Ball with hopes to increase field size, it was then changed to 8-ball per request of the owner. I also believe 8-ball will be the game to be. Re: IPT and Fox & Hound World Series of Pool.

As for the posts buy Mike Janis: Mike hit the nail on the head with most of his post's. I've seen most everything thing Mike described what I've seen happen in this area since my return to the game in year 2000.

OK now to ALICE, aka "ALLIE",
It appears to me she moved to Atlanta from the north & is aware of the events in Canada which are H'Capped.
Entry fees are based on HC, Check out 20K Tour in Canada.

As for me, I, would like to see a race to 1, 8-ball event on a 9' Table

Hehe, I love how everyone is getting into this and providing so much good advice.

Lamar,
as for the race to 1 8-ball event, that would work superb with the bar crowd. They ran that same idea down in gainesville, FL where I used to live and it was a giant success. Entry was $3 and the pot was matched by the house. Turnout was a success and the winner walked away with $100, 2nd with $50 or so and 3rd got $20-30. That would work on probably very well on a thurs. friday or a sat. night crowd where the heavy bar crowd comes out. Its a great future possibility.

But my original logic still stands with my tournament. First off, the open events with large money added such as the Southern Classic Open, draws out the A crowd. The last showing had a few local A players such as Paul S., Stevie M., Mark G., Doug Y., Brian B., and Horace. But most of them were road players or players from other regions. I'm not expecting the same crowd of pro players to come down to Marietta to participate in a weekly HcP tourny. True, Paul and Stevie might play once in a while (just as they do at the Cues weekly tourney) but its never a guarantee that they win in them. On top of that, only about 90% of the players who play in the handicapped tournament at cues actually participate in the open events. Just seeing the crowd that comes out to play in the Open Events here in Marietta are your average B-C level pool enthusiasts. These guys wouldn't usually throw out $50-$100 to play in an open pro tournament unless they thought they could gain some massive experience from them.

Just like the IPT with their one-of-a-kind unique format has generated huge interest in pool, I think running this tournament would do the same. Its so much about just getting people in a fair competitive environment and generating interest in a sport more than it is about catering to open and pro events. Personally, quite a few people I know take more self-satisfaction, when they beat a pro in a HCP tournament and get bumped up a ranking than getting robbed week after week trying to win an impossible game. Of course, there will always be the whiners and complainers but there are so much more people with enthusiasm to get better and be rewarded for their efforts. Unless that line of logic is totally out the door, then I don't see why this would be so detrimental towards the pool scene here in ATL.

Thanks,

Angelo

Yeah I remember when The PR 1 had 8 ball tournament on Monday night. That was the best tournament at the PR. It would draw 30 to 50 players a week. Im glad they switched it from 7 ball and 9 ball back to 8 ball. I dont like 8 ball myself but if thats where the money is at im there lol.

I also think the tables that will be played on in the handicapped tournament will have a lot to do with it. The Brunswicks there just kill the tournaments in my opinion. If they are ran on the Olhausens than it will get bigger turn outs I think. I dont see them being able to do that on a Wednesday night and Friday night though. You will also need to stop that poker tournament which ever night the tournament is on and make the players stop hitting balls to do a players auction. Lamar loves those lol. Just joking Lamar.

P.S. I was back to gambling a week ago against a Alabama road player. I almost passed out about 5 times and my leg buckled a few times, but I won.
See you this weekend Lamar

Atta boy sammy, always playing with all your heart! You missed wannabe roadie AJ coming in hear two nights ago. hollaring playing, $50 a game. He wanted to play me $1000 7 a head. Then he never shows up the next night.

h.c. tournaments

Just a old mans opinion; I have been the game room 7ft tables for 7yr, I have been having h,c, tournaments every wed-sun, and have a great response, I do this for my locals and regular custemers as if i have a open, all you greats come off the road and take thier money,i have had as many as 40-45 players for a one day tourny, think that wont work your butt of, i have a great group of players , and i wont let road players destroy it. {STICK}

Hey Angelo,
Angelo, would you care to advise your background in running H'cap tournaments. (Response not required as I already know the answer).
I respect what your trying to do here; As for your
responses, You remind me of my 2 sons in their teen years.
The older they got, the smarter I got.

If you are willing I'l be glad to help.

Thanks,

I'd be glad to get whatever help you can offer. I am young and relatively niave when it comes to this field, but I just listen to what the people want and I'm going to deliver. We already got the flyers done and printed. We're just waiting for the banners to come out. If there's a will there's a way.

The date is January 18th 2006 @7pm. Entry is $20.

Good luck and good playing!

So what day is the 18? Is it Wednesday or Friday? I dont know about the $20 entry fee with Atlantians lol. They hate paying $12 for an entry fee never the less $20. It is going to be weekly right? Its not like once a month or every once in a while is it? If its weekly the $20 entry is definently not going to fly.

Hey Sammy,
Believe the 18th is on a wed.
Would like to see his plans, which he has not yet posted.
Angelo has not advised what kind of records he plans to maintain in his tournaments.
If he plans on keeping records like I did with my tournament at KB & pulls no more than $5 from the $20 entry fee, he will earn his money & has the making of a good payout. It took me as long to update my records, as it did to run the tournament.
My entry fee was $15 & $12 went in the pot + the added $, made for a nice pay-out for a weekly tournament.
The larger the entry fee, the bigger the payout.

Well I just think that the $20 entry fee is too much for a weekly tournament. I would love to pay $20 a week to play in the tournament and have a shot at winning a few hundred a pop, but not everyone is going to throw $20 a week at the tournament. I like the $15 entry fee. I think it would get more players on a consistent basis.

Time goes on

Hey Sammy,
The first tournament I entered (late 60's, early 70's) had an entry fee of $2.00, the events lasted several weeks.
These events where for the working man only, no hustlers allowed. Matches were played during lunch hour or after work. Winner takes home a trophy.

All I can say now is we are in year 2005, soon to be 2006,
"Go with the flow".

Hey Lamar and Sammy!

Flyers are up now all around The Pool Room I and banners are to come soon. 18th is a Wednesday and $20 sounds reasonable seeing how Cue's charges the same amount.

Here's the breakdown of the money:

$1 for break and run contest (carries over if no winner)
$1 for 9 on the break contest (carries over if no winner)
$2 added for 'Pro' Player points. (summed up over 8-10 weeks, still deciding which one is more feasible)
Small amount for the TD.

There's already a guaranteed $100 added and I'm still searching for sponsors for additional funds and prizes added.

Handicap will be ball spots not games on the wire like Cues does it because of time allotted. Most likely races to 4-5 on the winners and 3-4 on losers.

I will post a picture of the flyer on here soon.

Lamar, I must have missed you this last Sat. and Sun. but let me know if you're going to come by again.

thanks

Angelo
