Another splinter!

What am I doing to my shaft to make it give me TWO splinters?? I didn't say anything about the first one, because I just thought it was a fluke, but now I have another one. They seem to be coming from the bottom of the shaft.

I clean it with a ME. The first 2 or 3 times I used it damp and rubbed it down with a paper towel in stages. The last 2 or 3 times dry. Then burnish with a paper bag. Am I using too much pressure?

I cleaned it last night with some Pumice cleaner as suggested here, but I really don't see that causing it, although I did do my best to get the grime out of the lower shaft.

Will a good waxing fix the problem? I play with someone who harps on the wax, but I've never done it. Will 10 coats do it?

This is the first time I've ever heard of that. You must belong to that 'splinter group' we've all heard so much about.
Anyhoo, does that pumice stuff contain chlorine? Don't use anything containing chlorine. It attacks the wood fibre.
A dollar bill will burnish the shaft, although a twenty is better. I always used a Sparkle paper towel to burnish.

There has to be something seriously wrong with your shaft if you're getting splinters. Who made the cue? If it's new, get your money back ASAP.

The shaft is 18 months old. Surely it's not the cue maker. Not if NO one else has had this problem...

So do you think waxing will help until I get my Josey? :D

I've been playing 25 years with many different cues and have NEVER had a splinter from any of them.. You must be special ;)

Hi Surly!

Is there anyone in your area that does cue work? I'd give it to them to work on it.

I hate wax.

The only things I use on my shafts are high grit sandpaper (800-2000 grit).

The magic eraser is garbage--I wouldn't use it dry or wet.

If the pumice is pure, it is just ground, soft stone. I could see it working it's way into pores.

Has your shaft been subjected to heat/humidity swings (especially abrupt changes)? Has it sat in the sun?

If you were using a damp or wet magic eraser on it, you may have gotten the water into the shaft and caused the fibers to separate.

I advise against wax. Wax attracts dirt and feels sticky.

You are not burnishing too hard.

One other thought--is your shaft something other than maple?

I'd also never do to your josey any of the things you have done to this cue. It'd be a shame to see it have the same problems.

Water may be the problem... but it was a barely damp ME wiped dry within minutes. No heat or humidity changes at all. Shaft is maple.

My friend swears by the wax, and his shaft is super soft.... I've felt sticky waxed shafts before, but his is pretty amazing.

HEY TRIGGER! How's pool?
