Another Tip thread. Holding chalk?

Shiver me timbers.

I want to use a tip that is about as hard as a Moori medium. Which I think is a little harder than most mediums. Could be wrong about that, not sure.

Anyway, here is the dilemma. The Moori mediums that I tried. Two of them, neither would hold chalk worth a shit. I see people say on here that they do hold chalk ok and I've seen people say that they don't. I've also read on here that there might be some fake Moori's going around.

So I guess there are a couple of things I'd like to get out of this thread.

1. A couple of types of tips that are about the same hardness as a Moori medium, that really hold chalk good.

2. If I got another Moori medium to try, how can I be sure it is the real deal.

Captain ...

I found this website very informative and valuable:

Select 'Tip Selection' off the main menu, and go almost to the bottom
with the ratings scale for different types of tips:

Thank you for the response Snapshot. That is a good site and I've been there before. It talks about a lot of things in reference to tips but it doesn't talk about how well different tips hold chalk.

He does say that the harder the tip the more likely you are to miscue. I guess that insinuates that a softer tip holds chalk better. Or don't you think he was insinuating that at all?

I know it is possible to have a hard tip that holds chalk because I have an X-Breaker. This tip is like a rock and chalk just sort of adheres to it. I couldn't believe it when I first got it.

So I'm looking for a medium hard playing tip that holds chalk like this. Is there one?

Richard, when are you going into the playing tip business and put a tip like this on the market?

I always buy and use Master's chalk. I like hard tips and don't have any problem with the chalk sticking. Both of the cues I use now have the tips that came with them so I don't know the brand of them. One is the milk dud that Mike Johnson uses on his Jensen cue and the other is the tip that Andy Gilbert uses on his J/B.

Have you tried different brands of chalk. That may also make a difference.

Hi Captain,

Give the Hercules medium tip a try.

Hercules tips last as long as a Moori, keep their shape, and hold chalk very well. I have Hercules tips on all my shooting cues and I'm quite happy.

Talisman pro med tips would be another good choice.

FWIW, a good friend and team mate had me install a Sting Ray tip on his cue and he's been quite happy with it. (AFAIK, Mueller is the sole source for Sting Ray tips.) It's rated as a hard tip but according to my buddy, it plays like a medium, doesn't mushroom, holds chalk and works fine.

As far as making sure you are getting real Moori tips..I'd suggest you buy them only from a legitimate retailer i.e.:Mueller, Seybert's or any other of the legitimate suppliers.

Captain ..

I second that for Hercules layered medium hard tips. I also have them on my cues, and like them real well. They last me 2-2.5 years, but I don't whittle
on them.

Getting chalk to adhere.

In "How To Tip a Pool Cue" bt Terry Macioge, he advises that after replacing or reshaping a tip, you chalk the tip, then use a tool to seat the chalk into the tip, using a Tip-Tapper or Tip Pik. Then re-chalk, removing excess by hitting the shaft against your hand. He feels that seating the chalk lets it hold the chalk to the surface better.

Thank you all. I think I'll give the Hercules medium hard as my next try.

I'll let you all know how I'm doing.

Thanks again
JR

The Talisman Pro Med, and Hard hold chalk well. I put the Med. on all the cues I build. On my cue I have a Talisman WB hard, holds chalk and grips the ball well. When they start to get a little slick I just hit them with a Tip Pik and their as good as new.

Ut oh.

We have Hercules Cue Tips and we have Hercules2 Cue Tips.

Which ones are you folks talking about or maybe it doesn't matter.

I was refering to the Hercules Cue Tips (Medium) laminated pigskin.

I have no experience with the Herc 2. From what I gather in pictures, the Herc 2 is pre-domed, and judging by the color, it is not pigskin. (I'm not sure, but it could be water buffalo.)
