To get a functional joint and butt cap from Antlers, how thick would these need to be?

The challenge with using antler material for joints and butt caps is finding pieces with a more solid center. They tend to be soft and pithy on the inside.

It's more forgiving with caps because you can line the inside with phenolic.
You can bore it up to 1" and line with phenolic. But, it's getting harder to find large pieces.
Joints have to be clean outside and pith not more than 5/8.

1 1/8 for joints gives you lots of room to play. Pith not more than 9/16 preferably.
Caps around 1.5" or more to get a clean 1 3/8

Moose is normally a better material to use that Deer or Elk as it is more solid in the middle. Real Stag from over seas is nice but very hard to find. Especially in the right sizes.
