I actually haven't spent too much time with straight pool. I've messed around with it and have 2 runs in the 90's. Never broke 100 though. I think it's a great game and if they had more straight pool tournaments I would give it more time.
I am taking a flyer at the Qlympics straight pool event in November. We'll see how that goes.
Many great players have told me (and I respect their opinion a lot) that straight pool is the best game for learning all aspects of pool, especially concentration. Playing straight pool by yourself has almost as much pressure as gambling, or being in a tournament. Reason being that if you are on a good run, say 40 balls or above, you will continue to play hard so you don't blow such a good run with a silly mistake.
