It was my favorite tip until I tried the Taom Fusion tip, the feel on these tips is vastly different, IMHO the Kamui Athlete tip plays like a medium tip, the Taom Fusion plays like a hard tip, I expected them to be more alike, I didn't think I would like a hard tip but I have been using them now for over a year, If I didn't like the Taom tip I would still be using the Kamui , it is a great tip.SUPPOSEDLY,

Kamui claims the Athlete tip is designed for carbon fiber cues because of the effects of having a tip with layers of leather of different hardness. Kamui's explanation is below:not sure how a tip can be carbon fibre specific though
Yes I know. Lots of tips have had different hardness layers, so that's no anything new. I sell Kamui and I'm a Kamui dealer, but I honestly can't stand behind that part of the marketing, very good tip though and feedback from customers have been great.Kamui claims the Athlete tip is designed for carbon fiber cues because of the effects of having a tip with layers of leather of different hardness. Kamui's explanation is below:
Modern billiard shafts, particularly carbon shafts, have significantly improved power transmission and achieved less bend at the shots. Therefore, a tip to improve the shaft’s performance is required. However, there has been a trade-off between elasticity and stiffness in previous common tips.Kamui Athlete tip has been designed with rigidity to utilize power and elasticity to enable a soft touch by layering leathers of different hardness'.During shots, a great deal of force is applied to the lowest layer of the tip, which is far from the point of contact between the cue ball and the tip. This allows the user to benefit from flexibility when striking the center of the hand and avoid power loss due to stiffness when spinning. As a result, the tip emphasizes the characteristics of the carbon shaft.

Interesting. Good to know. Helpful.Lots of tips have had different hardness layers, so that's no anything new.
Zan Hybrid Max, Taom Fusion and Navigator Alpha are the first that comes to mind, I'm sure there are othersInteresting. Good to know. Helpful.
Do you remember the brands of other tips that had layers of different hardness?
Obviously cue tips with layers of the same hardness of leather versus cue tips with different layers of leather hardness are different tips.
Who knows? Might the different-layer tip be a better tip?

I'm going to give you an honest tip here. Pooldawg8's milk duds play lights out on a CF shaft. You really won't believe how nice they play. I know a one piece tip isn't considered high tech but I would put them up against any playing tip on the planet. Consistent in every batch, they drink chalk in (hold it excellently), don't mushroom and last for ages. They are a good price too. I got a replacement kielwood shaft recently and cut off a less than week old Kamui tip and replaced it with his dud. I have one on my CF and regular old maple shaft also. Don't let the price fool you, it has nothing to do with how it plays. They really are something special, and it's also nice to buy from a guy on AZ, but that isn't a main consideration in a tip. How it plays and maintains is and it's an A+ tip IMO.SUPPOSEDLY,

Second on the SAI. I've had terrible luck with break tips delaminating and it's held up really well. Never need to touch it.I've installed a lot of Athlete tips, both the Medium and the relatively new Soft version. Good tips for sure, not sure how a tip can be carbon fibre specific though. That seems like a marketing claim to me.. The last products Kamui have released have all been very good, the SAI tips is the most popular break tip in my shop at the moment.
Less maintenance when compared with the comparable black or clear black at the same hardness rating.Second on the SAI. I've had terrible luck with break tips delaminating and it's held up really well. Never need to touch it.
What's the impression you're getting from the Athlete vs the comparable Clear Black?
