Any one add an addition for a pool table?

I am thinking of adding a room to the house just for a 9 foot pool table, 20x16 I'm thinking is about right.

I was wondering if anyone here has done this and what it cost them? I would think it wouldn't be too bad as I only want 2 windows, no need for plumbing, 2 outlets and an overhead light and just connect to the houses heat which I already know is good enough to handle it.

So basically it's just a box, no real fancy stuff and I can do the finish work if I get time.....maybe :D

So it would be a big help if anyone here has done this or knows someone who did and has a rough estimate of cost. I'm guessing $20,000.

Room Addition

Great Idea. But your shooting from the hip here pardner. I converted my garage into a pool room. The size was 21 x 24. Just right for the table and seating. You will want more than two outlets. In fact you will want want to build it to code after obtaining the permits. Reason being insurance companies can be stinkers if any thing happens. Take some time and think about all the extras. Ceiling lighting, switched outlet for the table light. Are you going to have a stereo and tv in the room? The time to wire for this stuff is before you are done. I am sure alot of the other posters have alot of ideas to help build the perfect room. Good luck and happy shooting. Also, the cost for the garage conversion was $11,000.00.

BooBoo gave you a good reply. Don't go off half-cocked. One thing to remember is this. Spending this much money better be a wise investment. Proper code electricity is a must, your building will be inspected or you will be in violation of city law & they will demand you fix it or tear it down. They will also fine you.

I will also say this. A dime will get you a dollar that your friends may or may not come by at first & after the newness is worn, they won't come at all. They will tell you, "man, your place is great, but there is no action there. I wanna see the babes, the smoke, the booze & the gambling, I wanna be where people are". Good Luck

I built a 22x30 with 6 windows, french doors, 4 fixtures, nice berber and bought a 8' brunswick table w/simonis for 22k. I would think you could build what you are talking about for 11 to 15 depending on how finished you want.

WOW! 22x30 is a big room. I'm having a new home built with a room added that was originally going to be 22x18 with 2 windows and multiple electrical fixtures with no plumbing and the builder was charging me $15K and another $2,500 for painting and elevated ceiling. Just 2 weeks ago I decided to up the room size to 26x18 and he's just going to charge the same sq. ft. $$ amount for the original 22x18 at $15,000 to add the 72 extra sq. ft.

I think you have a good guess as to the cost and you could probably shave
some off if you can do the finish work. However just remember that your time has to be worth something. Some people try to save a buck and it ends up being too much and they usually have an unfinished room for a while solely due to lack of time.

Have more outlets just in case. It wont cost that much more to put them in
now compared to later.
Remember
heating and cooling
lighting in addition to pool table
cable or satelite wiring -- I would run this even if you dont plan
on having it in the room. Easier and cheaper to do it during the addition.
storage -- if your building a box then you may need to come up with a
storage area. Its hard to have too much storage.

Where are you located? Post it as their are people on the board from all over that might know of good reputable contractors to complete your job and/or aid you with it.

good luck .... i hope to oneday have a room dedicated to a table one day

Some things to think about...

Smokers: I have two HEPA air cleaners in my room to help clear out all the smoke. But even so, I sometimes need to open my garage door to get some fresh air in. Might want to think of adding an exhaust fan as well as HEPA air cleaners. Note that commercial air cleaners can cost thousands of dollars and replacement HEPA filters for central air conditioning are also very expensive. The lowest cost is to get stand alone units from Walmart - get largest model.

Bar/Beer/Booze: Helps to get people to come over and play. Buy the largest bottle of Jack available (lower cost per shot). Your higher class players will drink this directly from the bottle, so no need for glasses! I also keep "Night Train", "MD-20 20", and "Thunderbird" in my private wine cellar. No one has taken a drink of my fine wine collection, but I suppose it would do in an emergency (if bottle of Jack was empty). Mostly they drink beer and Jack. The women will make mixed drinks and want all sorts of mixes, rum, vodka, tomato juice, etc. Then some people just drink soda pop or water (like me). I went to a bar supply and got one of those round pizza sized drink serving things the waitresses use in bars to serve drinks. Sometimes I'll ask someone if they want another beer, then bring it on that tray, place a napkin down, then place their beer on the napkin. Then they usually "throw" a penny at me for the tip!

Stereo/music: I have a small CD player in the room and a large selection of CDs. No one likes the same music!

Hand held vacuum: I have a hand held vacuum to clean the table.

Seating: Usually two or three players, but sometimes as many as 7 people - not all playing pool. Next to each seat I have a stand with an ash tray and plently of room for drinks.

VCR/DVD/Camera: I have a TV, VCR/DVD, and a camera to record shots - then play back in slow motion. The TV DVD is handy for watching instructional videos while at the table. May want to think about providing shelf space for these things, wiring, etc. Cameras are cheap these days. It is best to mount them on the ceiling, but the light will get in the way. Anyway might want to get one camera to see what type of wiring is required, then run wires to several spots in the ceiling around the table - then could add a camera or cameras in the future if you wanted.

Space for "stuff": May want to have cabinets to store stuff like hand held vacuum, chalk, old set of balls, brush, books, and other assorted stuff.

Thanks for the info everyone, and good advice, If I can keep it under $25,000 I think I might boost the size to 20X20, then I'll have an extra 5 feet along one side for chairs, table, storage etc.

Great Idea about the camera, I might look into putting one into the ceiling, so I'll need to run wires for that as well. I didn't plan on having a TV, but I will run the tv cable, ethernet and phone just in case or for future use, and it's not going to really cost my anything to do that. I guess I'll run 4 outlets and certainly have a switch for the table light and another overhead light.

Ktown D, sounds like you got a great deal or maybe did most of the work yourself, if I could get a room 22x30 with 6 windows and the table for 22k, I would do back flips over my roof:D I'm in NJ and the building market is hot and builders are not in any hurry to stop working a sweet development job to add additions, and when they do they jack up the price.

I'll certainly still be heading to the pool halls for the action & tournaments and just to be out to have fun, the room at home is for the family and friends, no parties, no bar, no TV, and no music.....this is ames mister :D

Hey if any others have had a room built and want to chime in with what it cost, that would be great. all this gives me or others an idea or ballpark of what to expect.
