Any recommendation about shafts and Cues

I am in the market for a new cue in the $300-$400 range. I was wondering what you would recommend. Would you recommend a production cue, or something more basic from a custom maker?
Also, I want to use my current cue as a break cue when I get my new cue. Are there any shafts that will improve the break ability of a cue?
Thanks

Go to www.platinumbilliards.com you can find a lot of information about break and break/jump cues. In my personal opinion, using an old shooting cue as a break-cue is probably an excellent idea. I've always thought using a break-cue that you're comfortable with and similar to your shooting-cue allows for a natural transition between cues.

If you're looking for a good break/jump, I'd have to strongly recommend The Stinger. I'm indifferent to the way it breaks but as a jump-cue, there is nothing comparable. It's so good at jumping, it's almost unfair and has quickly become commonplace in professionals' cue-cases.

I recommended visiting that site not because it shows the differences between cues but the lack thereof. Really, you'll be surprised to find out that most cues make a marginal difference in break-speed. If you're looking to make a substantial difference in the outcome of your break, think control before you think of power. Any cue you've grown accustomed to will easily fit the bill.

Jude gave sound advice and it does look like Madison Bob makes some nice cues. I have been telling people who are in the market for cues to just be patient and watch Ebay. Great deals on custom cues are to be had on a weekly basis. I really recommend going custom if you are serious about the game.

If you know what you like, I'd suggest a plain cue from a custom maker. If not, I'd go with a JOSS.

I've put the phenolic tip/ferrule on an older cue, and it performs as well as any break cue. YMMV.

Thank you all for the advice. I was leaning more towards a lower end custom. I will take a look at Bob Griffins cues when I get home later. I also looked at Coker Cues. He is actually local here in Sacramento, and I have read a lot of good reviews of his work.

With regards to the break cue, I don't want to buy a new break cue. I was interested in using my old playing cue. The shaft on it is warped and has some damage near the ferrule from when my rot was a puppy. Is the 314 shaft or z shaft good for breaking, or will any shaft work with the phenolic tip/ferrule?

I like a light cue(15-16 oz.) for the break, and if you want a super playing cue, contact Dave Airehart in Sacto,he sells Bill McDaniel cues and one of Bill's MacAttacs is in your price range. Just my 2 cents on the subject. STB
