Any tips for a limey newbie to straight pool?

Thanksgiving is harvest festival to us celebrated since pagen times it falls sometime in september varying within different regions.

In my schooldays we either remembered it in time and got our mums to bake a pie or raided the pantry of tinned stuff to take to school at the last minuite. In assembly we would have tables laid out full of food that later was given to the elderly. Such displays remind me now of a supermarket but back then they was 4 or 5 times the amount you'd find in any corner shop as supermakets did not exist.

It's mainly a chistian celebration and though it might still be one within the church schools round here at least no longer bother with it. I asked my 23 yr old son if they did when he was at school and had to explain what it was. His reply summed it up pretty good i reckon.

"Oh yeah I've heard of it. They did away with it after the last time when the schools printed out reminder letters for us to take home in every language but English and ended up with a display of 300 tins of curry powder."

Wity

I came from a snooker background and switched to 14.1 in February. I did the math on the equipment just like you and I will say that it doesn't mean a thing when you actually play. I use a 9.8mm tip at snooker and prefer a 12.7mm tip for pool. You just have to get used to it. After about three or four sessions, the cue and the tip size felt natural to me. I was lucky enough to have a lot of different cues to try.

Straight pool is one of those games that looks easy and isn't. That's because it's about patterns not potting. When I first tried 14.1 I found it easy to get runs around 25. Any more was a lot tougher because of weak pattern recognition. Altho I love straight pool, everyone here plays 9ball, so if you want regular competition, that's the way you have to go. PM me if you want any UK specific info on equipment, etc, I have made some good contacts.

Cheers Ghost, "All about patterns" yeah i realise that as I've been doing far more reading and watching of the game than playing to date(total opposite to my snooker) as there's only two clubs locally that have tables. One has one and it seems i'm going to have to book it to get on it as it's usually occupied with youngster messing around on it.The other. my main haunt has two. The gaffer is in the process of fitting out a seperate room at the moment but i've seen no one working in there for a few weeks now, it's only 1/2 completed and the two tables are just under wraps in there.

If he dont get his finger out. I'l try the pool balls on the snooker tables lol If they are not to big to go in the pockets that'll be one hard bloody session :D

wity: i sent the 14.1 vids using a "forever" stamp. don't know if that will work or not. if you get an unusual envelope made from old, silver photopaper (it should be pretty dark by the time it gets to jolly old england) fear not to open.

Thankyou sausage, please lemme know what i owe you o maybe theres something I could get you in return.

I was thinking of some proper bangers all i ever got when i was in the states was them rubbish patties. but somehow methinks customs would not allow them in the country.:D

Maybe you could send him some bloody thing from the Beatties W'ton store instead mate. or a Sunbeam 1000HP at National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, UK.

Cheers

Actually i've a globetrotting body clock, couldn't sleep at all satuday night and went on a fishing contest sunday morning.
There i was catching bugger all and i fell asleep for about a half hour still holding my pole at 12 meters even though the float was 2 foot out the water. There i was snoring my head off and my dad was telling everyone not to wake me lets see if he falls in. After me mums sunday dinner i was akip again come 9pm and i've been awake about an hour now.

Which puts my body clock where today, Austalia?
