Thanksgiving is harvest festival to us celebrated since pagen times it falls sometime in september varying within different regions.
In my schooldays we either remembered it in time and got our mums to bake a pie or raided the pantry of tinned stuff to take to school at the last minuite. In assembly we would have tables laid out full of food that later was given to the elderly. Such displays remind me now of a supermarket but back then they was 4 or 5 times the amount you'd find in any corner shop as supermakets did not exist.
It's mainly a chistian celebration and though it might still be one within the church schools round here at least no longer bother with it. I asked my 23 yr old son if they did when he was at school and had to explain what it was. His reply summed it up pretty good i reckon.
"Oh yeah I've heard of it. They did away with it after the last time when the schools printed out reminder letters for us to take home in every language but English and ended up with a display of 300 tins of curry powder."
