Anybody Remember a Guy Called "Mountain Man?"

Mountain Man

I took this picture from my friend Joe Barr's MySpace page. Joe owns a room in Mount Airy, NC by the way called Granite City Billiards. Action can be found there.

I lived in Myrtle Beach for ten years back in the 80's,the local pool leauge team picked up a player named Mountain Man,went by the name of Steve Edwards,this is him.He was a very good player and a good guy,he used to try and bet me $20 a rack before he broke the balls that he would run out,never took that bet for good reason!

Mountain Man owned a small pool room in Lincolnton N.C. in the 60s and 70s. He was a noted "score" for every good road player at that time. Playing Mountain was an experience one never forgets. He would do some of the wildest things when he was going off. He certainly was a likable fellow at any rate.

I think that there are a few players around the country - past and present - nicknamed Mountain Man.

AJ is the one known here in the Midwest. He has spent most of his pool playing days either in Missouri, Illinois or Kentucky.

You won't find a picture of him because he won't allow one to be taken.

AJ beats to his own drum. He has incredible pool knowledge and is a great hustler.

When I was younger and worked in the pool room, some guys from southern Missouri would come up every Friday to play. I had AJ waiting for them one Friday night and filled him in on all of their speeds. He worked it like a champ, beating them in order and never showing his true game. He can miss 'safe' with the best of them.

Also, DO NOT EVER ask AJ to go to the horse track. EVER.

He is so clean looking in this pic that no one will recognize him when spotted in the pool hall again.

I think he's referred to in the Buddy Hall book "Rags to Rifleman" . . . they played for some bucks in NC.
