Anyone else play with a shorter cue?

I'm about average height (5'9") and I'm playing pool with a 58 inch cue. Sometimes I leave my cue at home and go to the local pool hall and use one of the house cues that range from 56" - 58" and my favorites have always been the shorter ones so I made an order for a shorter custom cue.

It seems like snooker and billiard players favor the shorter cues, and pocket billiards is the only cue sport that people seem to favor longer cues.

I was wondering if anyone else played pool with a cue that is shorter than the standard 58 inches.

I have a much more compact stroke with a shorter cue. I would like to use a 57-57.5 inch cue myself, but 58 is so standard, that it is hard to find one that's balanced right at that length. Anyhow, I'm with ya. I've played some jam up pool with a house cue that when I set it next to my opponent's cue, is an inch shorter or so. Jimmy Reid used to use one that was 55&56"! short compact strokes...

Here is the chart that Jimmy Reid goes by on his "No Time For Negatives" DVD:

Height----------------------Max Length----------------Max Weight
Under 5'1"-----------------54" Cue--------------------17 oz.
5'1" to 5'4"----------------55" Cue--------------------17 oz.
5'4" to 5'7"----------------56" Cue--------------------17.5 oz.
5'7" to 5'10"---------------57" Cue--------------------18.5 oz.
5'10" to 6'1"---------------58" Cue--------------------19.5 oz.
6'1" to 6'4"-----------------59" Cue--------------------20.5 oz.
Over 6'4"--------------------60" Cue--------------------21.5 oz.

I'm 5'6" and I use to use a 56" cue. I have found that short compact strokes are the way to go. I mostly just have a little shaft work done.
I have Fat stubby fingers so about an 11mm Tip is just right.

I'm 5' 7" and have played with 58" for years. I've thought recently about going to 57" on the next cue I have made. IIRC, Joey Gold's Cognecenti cues are all made 57" unless special ordered.

I have a short cue that I let kids use when they come visit my home table. It works well.

I'm 5'8" and all cues made to my specs are under 58"

My carmeli was 58" but will be approximately 1/2 inch shorter when I get it back from being modified... so I'll be that much happier when I get it back. I really do not like cues greater than 58", but can play fine with a 58" cue. I just prefer smaller and play better with a shorter cue.

I'm 5'9" also and my new cue will be 57.5 like yours. I asked to have it weigh 18.5 oz with a split of 29" for the shaft and 28.5" for the cue. I don't know where the balance point will be. What are the specs on your cue and how do you like it? Does it balance well?
