Anyone know if coin-op cue ball mechanims re-setable?

One of our local bar box tables has a cue ball that is absolutely intolerable. It' a rock, old and beat-up (but standard size) and it is the only one that works on this table, going through the ball return mechanism. On league night, we have the table opened and use our own Arimith cueballs which, when scratched go directly into the numbered balls part of the table. Does anyone know if that cueball mechanism is re-setable ?

Might be a question for the ask a mechanic section. I had an old bar box and the cue ball was larger than the rest. If that is the case, not sure what your options are. If it is magnetic the other suggestions are great

The answer is yes. It all depends on what kind of setup you have. Usually, it involves adding/mounting an appropriate magnet for the Aramith Green Logo or Purple Logo (best).

Returnable Cue Ball

My table is an older one, and the return mechanism only works for my larger cue ball, I also have the returnable cue ball that works on the newer bar tables, could someone familiar with the return mechanism, explain to us what we need to get to make the cue ball return where it should.

Thanks

You should start your own thread on the subject irock

Table

Remove the ball door and tell me the model #
Or a pic of the table.
Cougar-
I can show you what I think you would have.

Leopard

I'll get you more pics of inside table.

Hope this helps for now.

Similar to what I posted. Take a photo of the return mechanism. It's usually either the older scale/balance or the dual track. For the scale system, the heavier ball will tilt the scale and roll to the return side. For the dual track, there is a section of the track that a larger ball will be forced to the return track due to the center rail.

The "newer" dual track system (20+ years old now) have a magnet placed strategically to pull a ferrous ball (Universal, Metal Core, Metal Flake, Aramith Green, Aramith Purple) to the return track. When the Aramith Green came out, the magnet on some of the older systems just need to be replaced.

In both cases (scale or dual track), a magnet can be mounted to pull a ferrous ball to the return side. It's a matter of choosing a magnet with the right strength and making a mount, if there wasn't a mount available to begin with (or even if there is a mount)

I'm sure there are tables out there that there simply isn't room, but I haven't seen one.

Full disclosure: I've done this on two different styles of tables. For a total of two. That puts me squarely in Hacksville.

Gentlemen, thank you for your replies. This table does not have a "weight & balance" return but rather, the 'dual track' return and uses a magnet for the ferrous cue ball. This 'magnet' seems to only work (regularly) with the one, old, piece of crap cue ball. During league, the table is open and we supply our own Aramith cueballs and about 25% of the time, it will return them normally but usually deposits them with the rest of the balls so . . . I'm guess the magnet is weak and needs replaced. Where can I buy such a replacement magnet? Thanks again, Charlie

Also to 'dontlitethat' - I don't know how to post pics here - but - behind the ball door were these #'s: A12444. These don't look like serial #'s to me but there were no other #'s on this table - anywhere.

Table

September of 1965 valley started using the magnetic separator..

The only A in the serial number I'm familiar with is with the serial # with VA or 3A that was made in the 1960's...
The ceramic magnet will have loss of the magnetic power over time.

Without knowing what kind of table you're talking about, everyone in this thread trying to help you out, may have no idea what they're talking about. Is this table a Valley, Dynamo, Great American, Global, Shelty, Irving K, USB, Untited, Delta, Quality, American, Lola, ATI....I mean, really....you're asking what kind of spark plugs your car engine needs....only, no one knows what kind of car you're talking about;)

Rob, that's a diagram of a Valley Leopard, cue ball separator, not Cougar, to different separator systems.

Glen, the picture that has been removed was the pic of the cougar. I posted both pics so he could see the works.

Not sure why the pics not working... I'll check into it.

My bad. It's a Valley table and without knowing, the responders actually pointed me in the right direction and we're working on getting a new magnet ! Thanks guys.

Even old magnets can be made new again.

Or you could go to Valley's website and see about getting a new one.

Here is a very good PDF on their return: http://vdlp.net/pdf/2008/july08/Svc-Separator.pdf

Hey Skippy27, thanks! Exactly the links I needed
