Anyone know what became of Paulie Campbell?

Was just reminiscing and wondered what ever became of Paulie Campbell? He was from Michigan I believe and used to be a regular fixture at the Starcher tournaments in Akron. I believe he was a junior champion when he was younger and was holding his own with most of the big dogs back in the 80's around northern Ohio. Haven't heard a word about him in many years, just curious?

I didn't know him other than watching him play in a couple of tournaments in the late 80's. A few years ago his name came up and it was mentioned that he had pasted away. I don't know any of the details but perhaps someone else will know and post it here.

I had his Porper case for years, sold it a couple of years ago. Beat him one time in our annual 14.1 tournament. He drank himself to death to be rather blunt. I'm not sure how long ago he died, but it has been quite a while now. Maybe even ten years ago now. I believe he did have a liver transplant, and then drank through that one too. He just couldn't or wouldn't kick the bottle.

Thanks Neil,
Sorry to hear that, but I guess I'm not too surprised. I know he liked to drink but he was always really nice to Gary and I. He had a hell of a 9-ball break and I watched him torture Jack Hynes once at Starchers. He had a lot of natural talent. Such a shame to see it go to waste!

Paulie died more like 15 years ago. Same way Micky Mantle died...liver poisoning from heavy drinking. Paulie learned a lot from Nine Ball Harry Sexton, aka, "Poochie". If he could have stayed away from the bottle, he could have easily played with the best, especially on nine foot tables.
