Hi,

anybody playing 5 ball? Rules are here and there's a ball set from Aramith:
http://www.saluc.com/html/billiard/5Ball-rules.pdf

The nice thing is that a handicap can easily be set (poor player needs 51 points, good player 101 or good player cannot hit the 6, etc).

I've been training for 3 months with the Carom guys using my 20oz 12,75mm pool cue (hehe) and finally have achieved consistent hitting and scoring. Tonight I beat a senior player 2 out of 3.

It has been the source of great pleasure and shouting and laughing! So how about you?

Cheers,
M

sounds interesting, worth a try for sure

the 5 balls set is AFAIK almost only used in Belgium , to initiate the beginners to the carom small games. An easier game than the 4 balls game.
It's not played in tournament, and you'll verrrrry rarely (=never ;) ) see those sets been played by non-beginners.

The 5 balls can be a good way to make the carom (aka straight rail) basis more fun, more easier for absolute beginners. But the problem is, here nobody else than beginners do play it, so ... :)

erriep: Yes. But unfortunately, as far as I'm concerned.
Everybody seems to have so much fun playing it! It's quick, you even can do safeties, you can do very complex hits and a little bit of strategy is needed, too.

Of course it's easier as there are more balls :)

beneath_the_sur: No matches to be found, I'm afraid. I definately encourage you to try it out!

Cheers

the idea of the 5 balls is excellent, IMHO. But the cost of the balls set is way, way too high. damn Saluc monopoly !!

(but you can try it using 2 different regular balls sets, as for example one tournament edition, one super aramith)

Ah, that match is NOT with the numbered balls (so you can count points and have to reach a certain value, like 51)! And yes, the match on youtube looks rather boring...

I can attest that the actual 5 ball numbered game is much more interesting and usually other carom players stop their games and watch ours :)

The twist is that you
- always play alternating
- hit all 4 other balls and score 6+4+2+1 = 13 points in one go
- can kind of snooker your opponent (he needs 3 points, so you hide the 1 ball)
- need to reach exactly the 51 so you need to plan you last 3 hits carefully (e.g. last score you need is 8 = good, because you can hit 6+2 or 4+1 + 2+1 in 2 sets )

I'm currently playing to 51 and my carom opponent has the handicap - he needs to score 71. That way we usually have equal winnings and it stays exciting

Downside really is the ball set which is rather expensive. But no harm in playing with pool balls (6, 4, 2, 1 + white = 4).

Cheers!

We play 3 ball for 50 cents or a $1.00 per man......one ties all tie.........try to get 5 players..........I recall over the summer one afternoon where we played for a $1.00 a game.........no one won for like 7-8 games.......the pot was up to almost $40 when it was won.......would have been $20 if we played for $.50......it's a fast game and if you play shitty, you root for someone else to tie so you can start a new game and maybe win.......it's called pocket on the balls except for the break......a 3 will win most of the time and 4 only puts you into contention ......5 or higher and you hope someone ties because you don't usually win this game when you miss a ball.
