Vernon Miller (sideburns) great player, hustler & con artist out of Fayetteville NC. back in the late 70s to early 90s. He was well known by the best players in the country. I bet that their are players, backers & room owners with some great stories to tell about Vernon Miller.:)

I'm from Hamlet, NC which is five miles from Rockingham. Vernon would come over to Hamlet to our pool room hustling. He was a year or two older than me. He would come in to the room and ask everyone in there if they wanted to play for a quarter. He was better than everyone there. There was a boy my age whose father worked for the railroad. The father's name was Johnny Allen. He was nicknamed "Johnny the Brush" in pool circles. I only got to see him play once, and that was an arranged match against Vernon. He was a really good player and he beat Vernon that night. Vernon and his two backers had come over in a pickup truck. It was rumored later that Vernon was made to ride in the back of the truck on the way back to Rockingham.

I wonder if this is the same Vernon that now resides in Jacksonville,NC and at one point in time owned a pool hall there named Anytimes Billiards and Grille........ He still lives there and plays in the weekly tournaments but doesn't own the place anymore......

No this is a different Vernon.

Back in the late 80s Vernon had planed a 9 ball match in Rockingham NC. with Little Randy from SC. Vernon got me & the bar owner at Lake View Lounge to back him. The game was a couple hrs. old & no one ahead just swapping money. Vernon didn't seam to have his head in the game. I told Vernon we were wasting time, it didn't look like we could win & we were pulling out. Vernon said , don't give up on me now. Vernon went back to the table running out from everywhere. Little Randy & his backer pulled out after a couple hrs. Little Randy said they were broke and didn't have enough gas to get back to SC. Little Randy looked at Vernon & said, do you have that $75.00 that you owe me? Vernon shrugged his shoulders & said, I don't have any money , just playing for these guys. The bar owner gave Randy & his backer $40.00 gas money to get home. We split the winnings three ways. Later I was told that Little Randy said Vernon told him to come to Rockingham that they could make some money but Vernon double crossed him. later Vernon told the High Lake Lounge owner that he could get him cigarettes for $3.00 per carton in Fayetteville NC. The bar owner told me gave Vernon several Hundred Dollars to go buy the cigarettes. Vernon never came back.
