i was gonna try to do some work on a cue by myself. like i said"try" so really dont want anything to outreagous. so lets see everyones prices on here in pms. thanks, chuck

would like a blank with a couple of venners also

chris hightower, bell forest, prather, cue componets.

chris has about the best prices tho, i picked up a purple heart and maple one not to long ago to make a J/b cue worked great!

good luck in your venture

sounds like you might need to be looking for a source for some dufferins, unless your hoping to get lucky and do a great job on an expensive blank.

I second the recommendation on the Dufferins. I recently refinished a butt and made a shaft for it and now it's my playing cue.

My 2 cents,

Gary

A place for very inexpensive testing pieces would be schmelke

Exactly. You can get some for as low as $22..... or I would call up your local tavern and see if they will sell you some of their junky bar cues..... ebay might be another good place. You can find some cheap cues there and fiddle around that way.

I'd stay away from the blanks with veneers until you learn how to equalize the points. Do you want to practice on a $22 blank or a $300 blank?
Broken bar-cues are about free. I'd suggest you start there.

If you have taper bars set up, and want to create a cue from a blank, then schmelke would be my first choice. Inexpensive, and if it turns out good, you could hand it out to friends, or sell it, or shoot with it. If you need to setup taper bars, and, or don't have a good lathe to do the work with, then bar cues work well. They are usually free, but just don't have enough meat on them to take many turns to: straighten them, get the points even, then take a finish pass and all come out good and normal size, in my experiances. A lot of the cheap bar cues nowadays are from china and will be twisted beyond belief after a couple months of hitting the bar scene.

Dave
