things like joint protectors, chalk holders, pocket chalkers etc? Thinking about goofing around and trying to design some things in CAD.

I'm more of the subtractive type - CNC milling and routing. The CAD side is not too hard. The printing side is straight forward, though there are so many different options in terms of media. The downside is the print times are death slow, and media is not cheap, so I don't know what kind of ROI you'd get unless you set up a printing farm...

I have the printer, several different color filaments, software, and I teach engineering design so I have the time! Though I agree, it would be agonizing to try to mass produce something! I am thinking more of printing off a chalk holder or joint protector to give as gifts to pool playing friends or just to have as conversation pieces in my lab...

There are very few files on thingiverse.com or makexyz.com for pool related items...hmmm....maybe I just thought of a new assignment for my students...can you say built in labor force!!:)

This is one that I did. Printed it off myself in plastic then sent the design off to a 3D printing service to have it done in metal. I have done joint protectors and a bumper as well but this is the only pic I have on my phone.

Thats what I am talking about...did you use a program like solidworks or inventor to design? Ive looked online for some .stl files but not too many out there...

you should put it on thingiverse (if you are not looking to mass produce). I always "tip the designer" for gadgets i get off of there....might make a few bucks...

Yeah I will look into that when I get a chance. I used Solidworks to make the files. I can also just email some of the .stl files that I have used for different things if you send me your email. Mine is shannon.spronk@gmail.com

Another thing I have noticed with the chalk holders is that while I can design to any specs the chalk makers don't hold their specs too tight so it is sometimes hit and miss whether the chalk will fit or not. Usually taking the label off does the trick. Sometimes just a little sanding helps.
