I recall vagabond having some issues awhile back & maybe this was it, I don't know.

I cannot sign onto AZB using AOL's web browser. Yet another casualty of the new software change. I rarely use the AOL browser but when I tried it a few weeks ago and then again today, I can't sign on. Another friend is having the same problem.

It says "thank you for logging in" but when it takes me to the main forum page, I'm not signed in.

Vagabond, is this the problem you were having? Anyone have any ideas about this one?

Thanks!

I'm on AOL, and this problem you describe is the EXACT one I have when I try to log onto onepocket.org.

However, on AzBilliards, I have no problem whatsoever.:)

Sometimes it can be a cookie problem, but I find it very interesting that you and I are both on AOL, yet have this exact problem on different websites.:(

BTW, do you have AOL DSL or high speed cable?

Edit and P.S.: AND is there a feature on AOL that makes you want to use its browser, compared to your provider of choice?

My problem with AOL and this site's softwear is that I can no longer sign into Bob's account. Even if I clear my cookies and start new, It says "Thank you for Logging In Bob Romano" then say's I am not logged in.

I have tried everything, clearing cookies and all. I have a program called window washer. It goes into the computer and cleans the cookies, temp files and all. It still does not work. It used to be easy to just log off from my name to his, now it's impossible.

What's really odd is that I don't have the log-in problems using AOL when I am on my laptop. I can log into any website and have it remember my password info with no problem. The plot thickens...

Perhaps aol (can't understand why any of you would use aol, but that is besides the point) has some spam/cookie blocking software installed?

Can you add azbilliards.com to trusted sites in the aol browser? Not sure it has that function, but IE does.

I use firefox for my browser here, and it always works just fine. Would start looking at your security settings in the browser itself, and if you can make az a trusted site.

I've been on AOL FOREVER so when I got verizon DSL, I kept AOL. It's cheaper each month...they call it the bring your own plan. It was easier than changing email addy's plus I like AOL's mail.

AOL's web browser has gotten better but it used to be horrible. Even with the parental controls off, it still filtered websites (these weren't porn :p ) Also the browser seemed to be slower than ie, which actually still seems to be the case sometimes.

This came up in another thread today and I found this fix worked for me. Step-by-step instructions are here.

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely going to follow the instructions and see if it helps with me signing onto onepocket.org on this computer I am using now. However, it is strange that other folks are having the same problem here on AzBillards and I am not. It does sound as if it is an AOL compatibility problem. Thanks again. :)

Me, too. On my home computer, I had high-speed cable with Comcast for a spell, but didn't like dealing with the company and got rid of it. I was thinking strongly about going with Verizon DSL for $14.95 a month. My daughter recently told me that AOL is offering the DSL for just a 5-buck increase on the money bill for unlimited use. I think this is the way to go for me. :)

My daughter just got a new Dell a few days ago, and I'm going to go check out her AOL and see how fast it is compared to my gerbil-driven dial-up home base unit.

Another feature about AOL that my co-workers enjoy is the IM feature, which is easy to use. What do you think about IM's? Some of my friends enjoy them, and others find them intrusive. I'm usually working on a different computer which isn't hooked up to the Internet. I get so much more work done! :p

I got rid of my comcast cable a little ove 2 yrs ago, got a satellite & haven't looked back. ;) Comcast is nothing but crooks and they don't know the federal telemarketing rules too well either.

I got a new Dell back in Sept before the Open... best thing I ever did! I had my dial up for about a month afterwards and hardly noticed a difference. I thought it was crazy to spend the money on a new computer that's just as slow as my old one. I got the DSL and discovered a whole new internet experience! I'll never go back to dial up!

I used to enjoy the IM feature years ago but not so much anymore. Usually when I'm on the computer, I'm usually surfing the net which you can't do if you're constantly chatting in an IM. I actually keep myself blocked so no one can see that I'm online. With all the friends I've made over the yrs from SC to TX to PA... I'd never be able to get off the computer or keep up with all the IM's. :p

Way back when I first got on AOL I used to talk to anyone and would have 6 or more IM's going at one time! I don't have the patience or desire for that anymore but I do still keep in touch with a few of the people that I met by chance chatting. We send jokes & stuff. These are people that I "met" 10 yrs ago.... never met face to face but we still keep in touch. :)

AOL screws things up. Note that AOL internet browser is actually the Internet Explorer browser. That is, both use the same system DLL files (mshtml.dll, shdocvw.dll, etc.) and same internet options with respect to internet cache, cookies, etc.

That being said, since Internet Explorer is programmatically designed to be used by other components (Microsoft Money, Intuit Quicken, Nullsoft Winamp, etc.), that means AOL can feel free to modify other things about it.

By the way, you can still keep your AOL email address while terminating AOL's subscription plan. Why even pay them $14.95 a month for that Bring Your Own Access plan when you can retain the email address for free?

How? And if your e-mail is connected to another website, can it still transfer and you still receive e-mails from that other website?

Here is what you do: CANCEL YOU AOL SUBSCRIPTIONS AND GET A REAL INTERNET PROVIDER!

Sorry not trying to offend anyone just very anti AOL.

Sorry, I forgot to add that part, might have been helpful of me :)

Once you rid yourself of the AOL software -- and of the monthly cost, you can go to http://www.aol.com and follow the links to read and write email.

Even though you've canceled the service, you can still use your handle as your email address.

Email you send out to people will actually have a from address of "[yourusername]@aim.com" but people can still send you email to [yourusername]@aol.com.

I know that AOL now (finally!) has an ability to set it up so you can read/write AOL email via Outlook or Outlook Express or any other email program that supports the IMAP protocol. However, I don't know if this applies to ex-AOL members using the now-free AOL email account.

I got my sister to drop the AOL service and go with the free email account. So far no issues. Of course, if you decide you don't want to use the webmail option via www.aol.com, you can always call AOL and ask them to reactivate your account.

LOL I hear ya. I only used it because I needed to keep on top of things, especially when I troubleshoot computer problems for a living. Plus, there are ways to get it for free -- legally. I went 8 months without paying for it.

But yeah, there are always issues with AOL, it seems. And don't even get me started on those trained chimpanzees that staff the telephones...

The AOL mail from the website is different than the softwares mail. Honestly, I never use any of the AOL functions except the email and sometimes I'll use the dictionary from the keyword function sometimes.

I'm obviously more computer savvy now than I was when I first started using a computer. I didn't know anything about anything when I went to a friends house & they sat in front of their computer with their AOL account. That's when AOL served it's purpose....for us dummie that knew nothing, it was a very user friendly set up.

Even though I don't even use a quarter of the features, I still keep it for familiarity. I was tempted to get rid of it altogether when I got the DSL but I really, really hated the email that came with it. I've tried gmail also, which is "ok". I just keep going back to the AOL mail from the software.

There's been anti-AOLHELL people out there for as long as I've been on AOL. I realize it's not the best thing out there but it's a familiar comfort level for me. I have Verizon DSL and I use IE for my web surfing... I could easily do away with aol but I choose not to because I do like some of the features.

In that case maybe you can give us some input on maybe where we can begin to troubleshoot this problem(and please spare us the cancel the AOL bs:rolleyes: ) I happen to like AOL and I did not have this problem until AZ installed the new software.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions;)

LOL, I know a girl that went over a yr without paying.... she would call to cancel & they would offer her so many months free.... when that time was up she would call to cancel & they would giver her more free.

As my luck goes, I tried it a few yrs ago when they ticked me off... I got one free month but I got a yr at about half the regular price.

I've got it...it works now!

Go to "Safety" on the took bar

Click on "settings"

Go to "W" and click on "web internet options"

On the right, click on "use your internet explorer settings"

VOILA!

Edit - never mind! I was actually signed on. I signed out of the IE window, went back to AOL, tried to sign back on & couldn't. Even being signed on through IE, I still can't back on through AOL... that was weird though... I WAS signed on thru AOL for a few min

Well, it's it's difficult to do over a message board, I usually do this stuff in a computer lab. Or years ago, I did it on a telephone doing first and second-tier support.

But in order to troubleshoot a problem, we gotta narrow it down. Are you having the same issues as Timberly? In her original post, she stated something along the lines of "when I use AOL's browser, X problem happens."

Can you verify that, in order to narrow down the problem. That is, once you're connected to AOL, minimize the program and see if you can repro the problem using Internet Explorer on the desktop.

If you can, then it's an overall problem, and another thread on cookies (started by Worminator, IIRC) has some helpful suggestions on that.

If it only happens when you use the AOL browser (which is actually Internet Explorer anyhow), then I don't know. I only knew enough about the AOL software to sound halfway competent when talking with AOL customers, although I never supported their product, and they always called me in error.
