I sure hope the APA paid well for that advertisement disguised as a news story on the main page of AZBilliards.

Their new "Double Jeopardy" format is IMO just an attempt to get some of the revenue back that they must be losing in these tough economic times.

?We?re still seeing the sheer number of people playing, but in some cases, people are playing fewer nights. Instead of playing two nights a week, maybe they?re only playing one night as a way to reduce costs ? one meal out, one night of cocktails, one night of hiring a babysitter, less gas, etc.,? said Bowman. ?This is why many of our leagues now offer ?double jeopardy,? which allows our members to compete in both 8-Ball and 9-Ball on the same night.?

That's how the above reads to me......a way to collect 2 league fees in one night.

Anyone play this new format?
 
LOL yeah funny. I got a kick out them saying people were turning to their leagues for CHEAP entertainment. Should have read people joining to make the 23 rule count. Oh well love them or hate them they have the best marketing plan in the industry at this time in my opinion.

I like it.

Our Tuesday league is in the second session of the DJ format. Good thing about it is you're pretty much guaranteed to play at either 8 or 9 every week and sometimes both.

I'm for anything that can help promote the industry.

I play in a tuesday night double jeophardy and I like it a lot because we get to play both matches simultaneously on two tables at our poolhall so it takes just as long as a regular match would take. And I get two play twice in the same period of time, instead of one and done!
 
I'm happy to hear you guys like the format. How exactly did it work.....did you play the same team 8ball and 9ball matches. I'd love to hear how it's formatted.


This probably wouldn't work in a place with only one table and a lot of places with 2 tables usually have multiple teams so it could be tricky.

Yes, you play against the same team with 8 and 9 being played at the same time. The places we play have at least 12 tables. Once we get 2 hours past start time we're allowed to use more tables and play more matches.
The captains have to pay attention who they're putting up since you can't hold up a match waiting for another to finish. During playoffs you may be playing 2 different teams depending on the standings.
It's nice not to spend so much time sitting since you have twice the chance of playing each week.

The format isn't to bad if you want to play both 8 and 9 but can only get out 1 night. On the DJ division I play, we sometimes play different teams if there weren't enough teams in either format to have another division. Also your rosters don't have to be the same for both teams. It helps if you have some that don't want to play both.
 
The Double Jeopardy can be very confusing. You have two separate scoresheets and rosters. On your rosters, you can have the same players or shared players or totally separate. Yep, you can have as few as 5 players, the same roster for 8 and 9 ball, or you can have as many as 16 players, 8 players on your 8 ball roster and 8 other players on your 9 ball team -- it's still all the same team. And the APA 9-ball scoresheet is tough enough to keep up with all by itself, let alone trying to keep up with it while part of your team is playing 8 ball at the same time on the next table.
 
One of the biggest complaints I hear is players don't like to have to spend the entire night waiting to play one match. This seems to address that complaint in a good way. If it shows up in our area, I would probably get involved. More playing time is more playing time.
