During lagging if someone's ball crosses the long string what is the ruling?
1. Lag - Method used to start a match. Players
simultaneously shoot a ball from behind the head string,
banking it off the foot rail and back to the head of the
table. Striking the side rails or any pocket results in loss
of the lag. The closest ball to the head rail wins. It is
permissible to strike the head rail. If the lagged balls
make contact during the lag, re-lag.
Being it does not explicitly say you lose or don't lose many will argue one way or the other, because that is the kind of people they are.
So lets be clear about his question: Based on what it says above, if one crosses center but they do not touch then it is fine provided one does not hit the side rail, a pocket or the other ball. If it hits the other ball you re-lag. If it hits the side rail or goes in a pocket, it is a loss.
Anyone who has ever played in a higher level tournament knows the WPA rules (used all over the world) are any ball crossing the long string (center line) is considered a bad lag and cannot win the lag. That's why I was asking for clarification. Hopefully our LO will eventually give out the latest rule book.
Genus Mr Brown... My 2013/2014 Official Team Manual says on page 48: 1) Lagging, Players lag to see who wins the first break. If the lagged balls make contact during the lag, re-lag. The winner of the lag breaks in the first game and from that point on the winner of each game breaks in the next game. It's vague in the description. Perhaps the wording has changed in the latest book which is not available in our league. That's why I asked the question.
