Just wanted to know if anyone know when the mini tournaments are held, is it held thru-out the day or only late at nite after the main events are over. This is for the APA Nationals next month. Any info would be great.

I have been told, but I don't know firsthand, that they are pretty much 24/7 the entire week. Hope we both find out for sure soon.

They run nearly around the clock, in a dedicated room with over 100 tables, separate from the team event. It's the same room as the Triple Play, and probably a few other pre-registered events, so the number of tournaments at a given time can vary.

But you can't pre-register for the mini's, and the lines get very long. And you can't have someone else buy you into an event. One tip is to just stand by the front desk about 20-30 minutes before the time the event you want starts. Have your cash in hand, wait for someone to offer the spot for sale, and then move quickly. This works about 1/2 the time.

Last year when I was there the Mini's started at 8am (I believe) and the last one started at 1am. There were different Mini's started every quarter hour, if I remember correctly. This was each and every day of the week long tournament.

Last year the APA site had a printable schedule for all the mini's but I see they don't have it this year. Check their site again later, and see if they eventually put the schedule up.

Good luck and have fun.

Like stated by others before me the minis do pretty much run 24/7 the entire week. The only thing I don't agree with is this

"And you can't have someone else buy you into an event."

Maybe I'm wrong but I think if someone were to buy a mini in their name and then before the event sell it to you that would work. I did this last year a few times.

Good point--because they're sold on a 1st come-1st serve basis, you could pretty easily ensure that the right person buys the spot. However, I do remember being annoyed that to buy into a doubles event, both members have to be present (or in this case, two people have to be there, one or both of whom could sell their spot.)

Also, you can play up, but not down. That is, a 5 can buy into a 6s and 7s tournament, but not the other way around. So you probably want to send a lower handicap to stand in line and buy into a bunch of minis. This is particularly attractive if you happen to have a higher handicap.

I don't remember the exact time frame, but as I recall, you can only buy into tournaments that are X hours away (X=3, 6, 8, the same day?).

I'll be playing in a lot of them

I hold in my hand an actual schedule from last year. The first ones start at 8:00am and the last ones start at 1:00am. I emailed the APA awhile back and they said the average tournament runs 3-4hrs. They start on the Friday the tournament starts and end on the next Friday. I'm going out to play in as many as I can get in, maybe we'll cross paths.

P.S. You can buy into them 24hrs in advance.

I remember playing those mini tournaments 3 years ago. I never played them again. I played a couple 9 ball minis and ended up giving weight to 7's (I am a 9) that could give me the 7 ball. I found that in each one I played, I got beat by someone who was sandbagging. Now 2 out of the 4 specifically told me that is what they were doing because they apparently felt bad because I was a girl. It seemed that was the reason they told me what they were doing with a bunch of sorrys thrown in there. (I dont think they would have told me if I was just another guy, you know...)

Anyway, good luck. You never know, you may have a different experience. Or, if you are a 3,4,5 - I dont think you will run into it as much as I did.
