APA Mini Tournaments

Will the IPT pay?
Silver Member
I am planning on going to Vegas this year and playing in as many APA mini's as possible. I am an sl7 and will be playing 9 ball only. I have a few questions for some of you in the know. How long does the average mini run, if you win?
Is it possible to play in more than one tournament at a time? I still have a schedule for the mini's from last year, and I see that they have tournaments at 1:00 a.m. for any skill level. Do these tend to fill up? I seem to remember the payouts being $120 for 1st place, what are they for 2nd and 3rd? Any help is much appreciated.

I think these are questions that would best be directed to the APA since even the more experienced APA members likely know little about the detailed workings of the mini-tournaments. Why don't you email them? I'm sure they have contact info at their website (www.poolplayers.com).

Thanks for the suggestion Jude. I searched their website before posting and didn't find the info I was looking for I'll send them an email. I'm also trying to get any first hand info from people who have played in these before. I already know that I can sign up for more than one mini at a time, but is it feasible to actually play in more than one at a time? What is the competition like? Do I have better odds at the slots than in the mini's?

Its best to buy spots or many events and then if you cant play sell them.
They will sell quickly.
The time per mini really varies. I would say 2.5 -3.0 on average. You can not
play in more than one at a time. They really frown on that. I have seen
every time slot fill and they all will again.
I am not sure when you will be arriving but if its for the 9ball or earlier in the
week then buy your spots then. As the 8ball teams start arriving and getting
knocked out most events will be sold out.
If I am remembering right each tournament only pays 1st and 2nd. I could be wrong on that. The entries range from 5-50 Depending on SL. I think the average one was $20. There are a few that are $50 and those are usually for the higher level players. You should be able to find one.
Also if you are looking for an event and its sold out you can stand or sit by the mini-tournament desk and thats where they sell the spots that people have already bought but can not play. If you have one to sell just go up there and where the group of people are standing ask if anyone is looking for a spot. You can also ask the desk and they will annouce the opening over the intercom.

Chilifide,

It's been a couple years since I've been there, but as I remember it they ran a variety of events 24-7 for the length of the 9ball and 8 ball nationals.

The couple things I remember are this:

-Usually 16 man events (single elimination) full payback
-There was the occasional 8 man event
-cost was $20
-couldn't sign up more than 24 hours in advance (prevents alot of empty slots later in the week)
-obviously, you have to be current APA member
-I'm pretty sure you'll need your I.D. when you sign up. If not, you have to get back in line (learned this the hard way)

-I wouldn't sign up for more than one. They keep them moving and it may cost you a forfeit.

-One other thing, if there is an event you want to get in but it is full, hang around the signup desk. There are usually people selling their spots and the Tourn. Desk will announce the spot is for sale. Run quickly to the desk with cash and ID.

My last time there, we got into Vegas early and I jumped in as many as I could (SL 6 at the time) and wound up winning around $500 before the 8 ball event even started.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck!!

The mini's are 100% payback. So, for a 16 player field at $20 (16 x 20 = $320). 1st place receives $160. 2nd place receives $80. 3rd and 4th receive $40 each - the two losers don't play each other so they're essentially both 3rd place.

All the minis usually fill up (even 1:00am ones - it's Vegas!), especially at the National Tournament, since it's the largest one.

Mini's

I've only done one which was at the National Singles in April. It was a 16-person SL7 8-ball and began at 9pm, $20 entry. I finished at 3:10am. Finishing at that time was not worth the $160 I won. I was able to get in that afternoon with no problem. Last year I couldn't get in any of them. The difference was the weather was gorgeous this time, mid 70s and many people (myself included) just did not want to be inside playing pool in the Riviera when there is so much more to do.
