APA Roster for Toledo Format

Morning,

Not looking for a bash the APA thread, just looking for opinions on what APA / CPA players feel the best 'Toledo' roster would be? For this please assume that all players are average within their skill level / region and the max is 23!

For those that may not be familiar with 'Toledo' format, its where teams have to put up rosters by skill level from low to high (Ex. 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 = 23). The single game matches are then played in this order. A win is worth one point and the race is to a set number. The order of play is 'lowest to highest, highest to lowest and then back to highest again. You are not able to match up as the rosters are revealed at the same time.

Your input is appreciated!

What is the "set number" being raced to for total wins? That dictates some of the strategy.

And 8-ball, or 9-ball, or both?

Interesting stuff...

So the matches are set by handicap so lowest play the lowest, etc...? I like that format, as long as handicaps are actually fairly set. After being at a league nationals recently, more than half of the players were a half level to a level too low in their handicap, which makes the handicaps useless unless you are out to cheat.

I played in an apa tournament recently similar to what you are describing . A few differences though.

5 man teams with only 3 players each match with a 15 limit. Some teams were 3..5..7.. Others were 4..5..6.. Ours was 5..5..5. You made your roster in advance with lowest to highest and it stayed the same through the match.

You only played one rack against your opponent each time with the win worth one point. You rotated 8 ball and 9 ball each rack and it stayed in the same order through out the match.

In other words player a on each team played 8 ball. Player b played 9 ball. Player c played 8 ball. Player a played 9 ball. Player b played 8 ball and player c played 9 ball and you continued in this order until the first team to win 5 racks.

It was very different from your weekly format and I loved it.

One thing of note using this format in our tournament. As you know ...a lot of people have different handicaps in 8 and 9 ball. this tournament used strictly your 8 ball handicap which meant a 7/9 could be facing a 7/7 or lower handicap each rack.

Having all 5's on our roster our strategy was .... Weakest 5....strongest 5... Second strongest 5. we came in 2nd place. You basically needed to win 2 out of 3 racks each round. In hindsight we should have played our second strongest 5 first....strongest 5 second and weakest 5 last. some 3's and most 4's were giving our weakest 5 fits in some matches .. Remember its only a race to 1 in each match up and no body on our team was gonna win a rack against some of those 7/9's so we should have dumped our weakest player on them and concentrated on winning the first 2 racks each round.

Hate coming in second...means last loser. Lol

Yes lowest will play lowest and highest will play highest in each roster.

The handicap issues you mention can always come up. That's why I was looking for feedback based on if all handicaps were accurate.

The format you mention was used for our 'Captains' tournament earlier in the year and it was a lot of fun.

Thanks for the feedback on the strategy. We have a pretty good range of Skill Levels so it should be interesting.

In 8 Ball we will have a 7, 7, 6, 6, 5, 3, 2 & 2.
In 9 Ball we will have a 8, 8, 6, 5, 4, 4, 3 & 2.

I played on several teams at that event years ago. We always went with 76433 and even managed to win it once. Dan Kromer was running it with the APA league operator from the area. Was always fun.
