APA Sharking Question

Are you part of the problem, or part of the solution? You can not engage in sharking and sandbagging. You can also not tolerate sharking and sandbagging. Its gotta be both if you want to believe you are part of the solution.

If this situation happened to me, I would immediately step up off the shot and ask my opponent if they were conceding the 8 ball. If not, I would ask them to please return to their seat, or at least not move in my line of sight until my turn is over. If they wouldn't do it, I unscrew my cue...match over. Just like your #3 above, its just not worth putting up with absurd childish behavior. I will not tolerate it.

Good luck in your LTC match!

KMRUNOUT

This is exactly what I do, especially during my lower players' matches. I'm pretty unflappable, since I learned to play in bars, but even for me, there's a principle to it.

Also let the record show that I walked over to my captain before she was down on the shot. I was walking as she marked her pocket.

Many divisions don't enforce this until higher level play, but you shouldn't be talking to your teammates during a match. It creates opportunities for illegal coaching. I'm not saying you did that, just explaining the rule.

Man, we are being really hard on a guy that obviously didn't know better. Everyone on this board has made this same mistake at some point.

I think the response would be different if the OP's subsequent responses were, "Hmm, I didn't think about out it that way. I'll be sure to stay in my chair next time." He solicited feedback, got it, and has held steady nonetheless.

Nobody likes to blame themselves for missing a easy shot, right? It seems obvious that she was trying to place the blame on you. Talking to your captain between shots is not against the rules. Sometimes people will walk in front of shots. It happens. If anybody has poor sportsmanship it should be her.

your name is very appropriate.

I was sure she would make it so I got up from my seat

This is the giveaway. By your own admission you got up as if the game was already over.

You should concede or not. If you concede, you get up and shake her hand. If you don't concede, you keep your ass down. There is no in between. The correct thing would have been for you to give it to her anyway. You may or may not have committed a technical rule violation, but you definitely did the wrong thing.

Sounds like poor etiquette, on your part.
I still should have made those 9s. Now I'm made at myself all over again, lol.

That's funny!!! I have the same problem, I went far in a big local tournament not to long ago, when people come up and say "I heard you had a good weekend" I get mad that I lost again because I really feel I should have won. They were the kind of matches where you don't get beat, instead you beat yourself.
Our leagues are in bars so there is always people milling around. One guy on our team will stop in the middle of a shot because someone 30 feet away moved. I have gotten to the point where I really don't notice anything when I am at the table, its almost like I am at home practicing by myself.

Alright soooo umm...

Quick question - My opponent and I are playing a match. She runs her balls down to the 8, CB on the rail and dead straight shot on the 8 in the side pocket.

I was sure she would make it so I got up from my seat to go my team captain and grab something from him - while I'm walking she shoots and misses then blames the fact that I was walking for her miss and said I sharked her...

Please note that in the APA league people are moving past your tables all the time and you shoot despite the commotion. Sounds like poor sportsmanship to me, right?
You sharked her.

I guess I'm wrong but not intentional. Usually I stay in my seat to watch because I love to see what's happening on the table but I actually was conceding the shot because I really didn't think she'd miss.

She decided to shoot anyway - and missed by more than a diamond (possible sandbag? The ladies a 4/5).

Lately in matches (and for the remainder of that match) when I was done shooting I stepped away from the take and parked myself by the wall with my team mates because it helps me to alleviate my competition anxiety.

Lesson learned (sorta) - I really do usually stay in my seat. I just didn't think the one time I got up would be a problem.

Either way I don't really care- I won the match and overall set (3 to 1). I'm just asking because she kinda made a scene out of it.

You do understand that if you hand't sharker her, it would be 2-2 or worse.

You asked. You got fair replies. There doesn't seem to be any reason for you to have even considered getting up until that ball dropped.

You're a good sport. That's what league is all about.

Maybe when you see her next and apologize you should point her to this thread. She might enjoy the stir this situation caused and the beating you took over it.

"Moving on the money ball"

I see this all the time. It doesn't usually get called out, but it's a very subtle way of attempting to either break your opponents concentration, shift the earth's axis ever so slightly, or just as a ritual dance to the pool gods.... your just trying to change SOMETHING in the air that might change the way that easy 8 or 9 ball is about to roll.

Don't conform to casual APA poor etiquette. People will notice and respect you more.

My venting...
My biggest issue are the woman (usually obese for some reason...maybe coincidence) that sit 4 feet from the table and run there mouth the ENTIRE match while never once glancing at the table. I can tune out normal background chatter...but I'm talking obnoxious, loud conversation that never stops for a breath. This happens about 40% of the time in my APA league.

Team captain had to go out for a minute and was giving me his phone in case one of our two missing team members called/texted.

Actually yeah - that's how my match was... The entire time she was talking (quite loudly and high pitched) about some ridiculous stuff.

She really didn't approach the table until someone tapped her on the shoulder (mostly me reminding her it was her turn)

He was driving to the gas station to get some cigs and he doesn't use his phone while driving.

The great thing about staying in your chair like your supposed to is,
you don't have to make up all kinds of excuses why you got up. LOL
