Oh, God tried once. But the LO told him to sit back down or he'd make him a 7.
Man, that sounds way too familiar...![]()
Thanks for all of your replies. The question of how are SL determined seems easy and complicated all at once.
it has been said a league is only as good as the lo. i guess i am one of the lucky ones to have a good lo.
our lo and his wife play on a few different teams. since he plays a lot of different people and watches matches he has a good idea of how people play and should be ranked. he did catch one sandbagger and raised him 2 levels after being a 3 for 2 years lol.
like i said in my 1st post our lo is new but he is doing an oustanding job so far.
to my knowledge they dont look at your losses. they just look at how many innings you played in your wins. they dont take your opponents s/l into account in your wins.
the 1st time i was raised to a 5 was because i beat a 2 quite handily. it was one of those nights i played above my usual level of play. i won 3 games in 4 innings. they raised me to a 5 that week. i never won a game the rest of the session.
but like i said in my earlier post our lo does a better job of adjusting handicaps now.
I think the win/loss % plays a part but only in lowering handicaps. Again, this is from memory so I could be wrong.

you are right. i was refering to being raised. the 1st time i was raised to a 5 and lost evey match the rest of the session (10 in a row ) after the lo looked it up he lowered me to a 4 again.
btw i dont think the lo has much input in adjusting handicaps anymore. all our scores are sent to the main office and posted on the national website now.i think they adjust them there, i may be wrong though. this was just started this month to my knowledge.
An LO can adjust anyone at his discretion. He's always the last word.
I seriously doubt they would default to a "system" over an onsite live representative, not to mention a franchise owner.
I guess anything is possible but I just played a couple weeks ago after a long time away from APA and out of the system. The LO who knows me already asked me what I wanted to play as since starting as a 4 probably wouldn't have been appropriate. He said we can always adjust it later if need be. Of course this was assuming we're erroring in the high side.
I do know they adjust on sight during post league playoffs, if they have the ability there youd think same rules should apply in house.
i dont know for a fact, i am just surmising the apa went to having the results of your matches sent straight to their database to curtail all the complaints of sandbagging. we have all heard of complaints to lo's and nothing was ever done about it. i am sure there is some leeway for the lo's input in handicapping just as there is leeway for local bylaws.
are you talking about adjusting local playoffs or local tournaments ? i have been involved in 4 end of session playoffs so far and never heard of anyones s/l being adjusted during them.
tournaments are different. there is a form you fill out with your info and there is a line where you can place your handicap if you feel it should be different than what is on file.
BEWARE ; if you change yor s/l on that form and the results of your matches indicate you played above your s/l you will be dq'd.
i went to my 1st top gun tourn. as a 3. the day of the tourn i was notified i was raised to a 4. i started to put down i felt like i was a 3 on the form but i left it as a 4 . they let me play in the 3 bracket but i had to play as a 4. i am glad i didnt change it because i won the tourn. beating a few players quite handily. if i had changed my s/l i could have been dq'd.
lorider, it's not uncommon at all for handicaps to get adjusted during playoffs/cities/states. Happened to us this year, and to another team from our area. Also happened to our team last year. They submit the results of each round just like they do each week during the session, and if it requires, it means an adjustment. In our case we were expecting our guy to go up at some point, we were just hoping it might happen later. He played a great match, so no surprise.
On the other hand, our LO doesn't record the results of the monthly GrandPrix singles tourneys, or his Best of The Best end-of-session tourneys, so nothing from those events adjusts our handicaps.

I SINCERELY wonder why Steve Jennings offers discounts to "LEAGUE" players.

I heard the same thing recently from a local APA player. If that's true, I may consider trying the APA again. Can any LO's out there confirm?
