APA Team Nationals In Vegas Question

SweetPea

Pug-n-pool lover
My 8-ball team won City Championship and we are going to Vegas for Nationals in August. No one on our team has gone to Nationals before. Any one been there and would let me know how it works, as far as will have time to do anything besides waiting to shoot? What happens if our team loses early in the week, do they send us home or do we just have a vacation the rest of the week? Any other info would be appreciated.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas...

Congratulations. Our team made it out there, too. My first time as well.
Curious to see what happens out there.

The 8-Ball event will have over 700 teams and only 100 or so tables, so at the beginning there will be quite a bit of time between matches for many of the teams. Depending on bye placement, some teams may play the first day, then not play again until the third day.

Later in the week, as the field gets smaller, there will be less time between matches. By Friday, the teams are playing back to back to back.

The duration of your stay is up to you. If you get knocked out of the tournament, you can spend the rest of the time doing whatever you want, or you can choose to leave early. Your choice - nobody will ask you to leave.

You need to talk to your LO to find out what your arrangements are. Every area is different so each team that makes it to Vegas isn't setup my the APA Nationals. your length of stay would need to be determined by you and your LO.

You will have some time as mentioned at the start. I have not witnessed a team NOT getting almost a whole day off at the start. Just allowing the first round to complete and then its closer.

Dont be surprised to see some matches ending late and your next match be few early the next day.

It is a very fun week in a place that is ALL ABOUT POOL.

Make sure to check out the website for all the scheduled side events. There is alot of things to do.

Your captain will recieve a packet and online he can look at the time and date of your first match.

Hello SweetPea, yall shoot good, and do us Texans proud!!!! If you are a Texas girl, I can carry your case around for you!!!????? If yall have any guys on your team, do not let them blow their wad in Vegas till after yall win!!! When I was living there, so many teams would get partyed out before their matches and not play well or miss their match!!! Remember what you went to do!!!!! Play pool, not give the casinos all yalls money, unless you know Fatboy!!!! What is the teams name????

Congrats on making it. From my experience, the first couple of days of the tourney are shoot, wait a few hours, shoot, wait a few hours, shoot....etc. That really cuts into the day of doing anything else. The event is modified single elimination so you will at least make it 2 rounds of play. Once your done, you can always check out vegas or hit up the mini mania for some other small tournies.

Have Fun

When your Captain checks in at the Riv you will get your packet and the schedule . It is not that bad ,just sometimes you will play late at night and right back up early the next morning. My best advice to you is have fun ,enjoy it , and see all you can . We have been several times and I still love looking at the footage I recorded on my video cam.
One last thing ,make sure you check out Freemont St at night !! And the pool at the Golden Nugget is a great place to have a drink during the heat of the day ! Good Luck to you and your team !

Stay for the finals

I would recommend that you and your team stay and watch the finals matches at the top of the towers ballroom. I captained a team last year and begged my players to stay and watch, some of them did, some of them caught a flight right after we got knocked out. A few of the players on my team were first time APA players and will never get to Vegas again for pool, so I tried to encourage them to stay and see how other people at their skill levels handled the heat of the final matches. Have fun and be careful, focus on pool for the first couple of days at least, ther will be plenty of time to party once your out of the tournament.

PS
Be careful walking the streets of Vegas, at the intersections and cross walks about 10 cars go flying past after the light is RED!!! Let someone else be the first off the curb!!!!

They give odds on how many get ran over every day!!!! I have never seen so many get run over,, some are in them wheelchairs, people flying by 80 mph about an inch away!!! One car ran in to a bus stop with 15 kids waiting for a bus, think 2 survied!!! It is nuts with that many people walking around and drive so stupid!! Do not walk to Freemont street no way!!! get a shuttle and you might get to run some more over!!! ZZ Brock

Have Fun First

If your team has room for folks to go up in SL during the tourney, then go for it. The first few days are chaotic and unpredictable. Tell your team to be ready for your matches to start at the most inconvenient times imaginable and not to hope for anything easy. lol

I remember a team that went a few years ago from here that went two and out and you would have thought they just got back from a funeral. They fell apart as friends after that as well. This is obviously not typical of all or even most teams, but the more balanced your approach is, the better experience you will have.

Remember that it's a handicapped tournament. Anything can happen good or bad.

Congratulations and have fun!

Thanks for all the imput. I've been to Vegas a few times, so I know of the dangers. Still waiting to find out if I can get the time off work and find someone to take care of my dogs. Sounds like it will be quite an experience. Thanks again all!!!

Got the time off work..., now I just have to figure out who will watch my dogs. As far as the Las Vegas heat, I LOVE the hot weather, which is why I moved to Texas from Michigan in 2001.

They are pretty cubby pugs, but they would rather eat whats on the pit that be on it. As spoiled as they are, they wouldn't be very good eating anyway:wink:

Its going to be my first time out there as well..however, I am not going for 8 ball, Im going for 9 ball. My team and I expect nothing but a good time...we're kind of hoping to either get knocked out quick or go to the end;) We have actually purchased VIP passes for the clubs on the weekends...thats where we expect to be

Got someone to watch the dogs, so Vegas here I come...WOO HOO!!! One more questions though, will I have to check my cue case or can it be my carry on. I have asked some people, but no one I have talked to knows for sure.

Thanks again all!!

You have to check your cues. Make sure to pack your case inside your luggage if possible
