It looks like after a decade-long slump, Johnny Archer is back and playing the best he's ever played. Whenever I hear topics about "Greatest 9-ball player" everyone has been hesitant to include the Scorpion in their top picks because he hasn't been smoking people since the 90's. Now it seems he got his game back and brought it to a new level. I really think he's gonna dominate pool for a long time now. What do you think?

Johnny Archer has always been there, and his three wins in a row certainly makes him a top contender in any event.

He is a good representative for the sport (IMO). Anybody who really knows Johnny can attest to his strong sense of family values, which always remains first on his list of priorities. His professionalism and contributions to pool are exemplary. He is a true Southern gentleman and an outstanding pool player.

Couldn't think of a nicer guy more deserving than Johnny Archer, and it is nice to see him in the winner's circle.

I certainly agree with Manlyshot that Johnny is extremely talented. And he is a good representative of the sport. However, I think one of the reasons he hasn't done as well over the last 7 or 8 years as he did before is because, like Strickland, Davenport, etc. they all play way too much golf.

Rickw may well be correct. "Pasture Pool" has long been the downfall of many a good pool player!

If you don't believe Rick and L.S., just ask Reed Pierce. Here in Jackson you can play 11 months a year or more and Reed wouldn't even attend the U.S. Open this year because his golf game needed work. How many of us would sell our souls to play top speed and never set foot on a golf course? Be thankful for the gift you have been given. Don't let a sideline affect that gift.

I hope Johnny goes back to his old self.
Playing fast and loose.
He started this taking tooooo looong to shoot pace and his game went downhill.
I saw him in LA during the Expo there two years ago.
It was a pain to watch him then.
All of his matches took over 100 minutes each.
Watching him play Troy Frank was like watching a French movie.:D
When J.A. was great in the mid-90's, he was fast and loose.

When I started playing Johnny was the first player to have made over 100,000 in tournament money in one year. That was a big deal at that time (and unfortunately it is still a relatively big deal in the world of pool in today's economy). He was averaging 3 and 4 balls on the break, and running out in 2.5 seconds...blasting balls in the pocket. Earl was about the only one who could slow him down, and Buddy slowed him down to a grinding halt at the Challenge of Champions. It seemed like during that period of the 90's a big tournament finals was always between either Reyes and Archer, or Reyes and Strickland. Varner, and Hall would pop their heads in occasionally too and snap off a tournament or two. The guys who are dominating now were paying their dues then, playing good, but still not at that "WORLD" champion level. Johnny got their very fast and at a young age. He has the composure, and the heart to regain that Champion status, but now I think he just needs the hunger and the work ethic to get and stay there. If I could pick anyone to watch play 9 ball, and I was going to watch them at their absolute best, it would be Johnny Archer. I think if he was playing at his top level, shotmaking wise and of course breaking the balls like King Kong, there is no one now who can hold a candle to Archer's 9 ball game. I hope he gets back on the saddle and dominates the game again. That would be great to see. I'm biased though, I've been an Archer fan for a long time.

Boy are you right! Watching Johnny In Vegas, Philly and Reno was torture! He'd get down on the shot, stop. Get up and look at the shot. Get back down, stop. Get up. Stroke his cue a few times. Get back down, stop. Get up. Look at the shot again. If I didn't know better, I'd swear he was listening to a James Brown song the whole while!!!! Now if I could only play that good......

Johnny is a 24 karat class act and at this point would certainly have to considered Player of the Year. Don't forget he still has some major events remaining in Nov and Dec. We were honored to have him come up to Calgary, Alberta and have him win the Western Canadian Open 9-Ball Championship which was part of the 2003 WPA World 9-Ball Tour. Good luck at the 2003 WPA World Finals in Japan Johnny.

Hi Harold,

Johnny was up in Oshawa, ON this spring for the LeScratch Nine Ball. He won that tournament also! We played the 100 + entry event down to the last eight. The finals were delayed till July 4th in Montreal. He certainly was one of the crowd favorites and, other than exhibit somewhat slower play than most Canadians were used to, put on a great show. He is a class act! Some attendees nicknamed him "Captain Morgan" for his new at the time facial hair.
