Its not the cue....but rather the tip that you need to worry about. Playing cues use leather tips, which will mushroom when too much force is applied.
New jump/break cues use phenolic tips that are much harder. These help withstand the impact of the additional force used during these types of shots, and maintain their shape afterward.
As for masses, a soft tip works best as it transfers more spin. A jump/break cue won't suffice for these types of shots, so unless you have a special cue for it, you don't have many options. I wouldn't be too worried about it though, as masses are rarely the proper option to play anyway.
