Are some people not meant to play the game?

Many moons ago I had a good friend who was pretty helpless. The following actually worked and got him pocketing balls better (YMMV): throw the balls out and just have him shoot them directly into the pockets -- no CB. He can start out with the ones near a pocket and then move to those further away. I dunno, but I think something about doing it that way and just getting used to setting up for a pocket helped him get his body right. Ain't gonna make no one a star over night, but might jog them into a better set up.

I got him doing it today. He didn't miss a ball after around 50 balls we called it quits and tried something a little more challenging. He set up 2 balls about 1ft away from centre pocket about a 1cm gap either side of a CB. Moved the CB back another foot and got him to shoot through the gap into the pocket. Gradually moved the ball back as he got better.

Then I added an OB into the gap and just shot 2ft stop shots. He managed to do it with a little success. Then we moved the OB back by around 2 balls from the gap. He did really well with this! Straight, thick and medium thin shots were flying in! Weird right? I asked him how he was doing it and he didn't really know.

Next we removed the balls. Got him to draw a line from pocket to centre OB and then focus on a spot a few inches infront of the OB on that line and get himself into a position that when he drops down to plain ball he will be lined up to make the OB pass over this spot.

His play slowed down a bit but he was making more balls! He made a few 4 ball runs in 8 ball and it couldve been higher if I'd taught him about CB control with draw and follow. Even threw in a 5 ball run, and missed the 8 for the 6 ball run. I was shocked to say the least. It was like he was a different player overnight. With a few months of position and CB control under his belt, and if his pocketing stays the same he should walk over most players in his league.

Ill give it 6 weeks before he has his first break and run in 8 ball. With a bit of luck I may get him hooked on 10 ball and 14.1 so we can play some games I enjoy!
