Are there guidelines or rules for Bridge?

I am working with a friend to create a bridge, and I wondered besides

are there rules or guidelines which spell out how high, wide, weigh, etc. a bridge/crutch may be?

I see this as one of the few areas of pool that has not been utilized to the fullest, and the idea came up playing one pocket a year ago when we were jacked up over another ball.

I don't know if you've ever played snooker, but imo, they have some of the best bridges/rests I've ever used.

The WPA (World Pool-Billiard Association) has their "Tournament Table and Equipment Specifications." All they says about the mechanical bridge is as follows:


  • "18. Mechanical Bridge
    The mechanical bridge, also called rake, crutch or rest, is an accessory of the billiard sports table and consists of a stick with a bridge head mounted at its end to support the shaft of the cue stick replacing the hand bridge during shots difficult to reach. The stick or handle of the mechanical bridge is very similar in shape to the cue stick. The bridge head has notches or grooves, usually at various heights, in which the cue shaft can rest. The contour of the bridge head should be smooth in order not to mar the cue shaft or rip the threads of the table-cloth when being used."

CSI (CueSports International), which operates the BCAPL and the USAPL, also has Equipment Specifications, and they say more than the WPA did:


  • "10. Mechanical Bridges

    The primary consideration for determining whether a mechanical bridge is legal is that it supports the cue, as opposed to elevating the bridge hand above the bed of the table or significantly enhancing the stability of the hand holding the bridge.

    The particular construction of the bridge is not relevant as long as it does no more than support the cue, and does not damage the table or other equipment. Items that are not considered disqualifying include, but are not limited to:

    • The overall size, or the height of grooves above the bed of the table;
    • whether there is a handle, sliding extensions, wheels, or accommodations to straddle balls;
    • the shape of grooves;
    • whether the grooves have linings or mechanisms to retain the cue in the groove.

    If the above information is not sufficient to determine to whether a particular bridge design is considered legal, please contact the CSI National office, and include a picture of the bridge in use on a table with your communication."
 
That Adjusta-Bridge is a fantastic bridge, I have had one for 3-4 years now.
Larry the maker of the Adjusta-Bridge certainly appears to be skilled in using a bridge!!
