Are you better or worse than what others think of you?

I don't see myself as strong a player as others seem to say i am. This got me to wondering how others here feel about themselves vs. what other people think.

I think I am a lot like the other responses that I read; in general, lower skill levels tend to significantly over rate my game, people my relative speed have it about right and higher level players just think they dogged it when I win.

Lower level players tend to think your best game is your average game. People who play my relative speed understand the inconsistency at our level. Higher Skill levels always think they dogged it or I got all of the rolls...lol.

People want people to be worse than their actual ability. They also tend to judge you on your most recent performance except when your performance has just been excellent.

Recently I played excellent one day and then terrible the next. The people I play with hardly said a word about my good performance and went on for ages about my bad performance with total amnesia of my good performance the time before. What's more they ask questions to try to make you say negative stuff about yourself.

I don't really care however what people think of me. I play for me, not to impress them.

I'm worse than my leauge thinks I play, and suck just as badly as anyone with a clue thinks I suck.
Same here. I've gotten a few compliments on my strengths, but for me it's my weaknesses that loom larger.

Psyching myself up

Good question and many good responses. As an addition...

I truly rate my speed as the "me" that plays near my top speed. Realistically I know that is wrong. But, it's a matter of confidence building. If I think I am, then I am much more likely to shoot that speed when I focus on delivering it.

I AM Johnny Archer, dammit! ;)

I am a legend in my own mind -- the hell with what the rest of them think.

I mean, come on, how many guys can string together three balls every other turn at the table.

+1 to the worse then what people think. I can goof around and seem to shoot pro like, but when it comes to tournaments, gambling, and league play I sometimes get pooltarded.

I'm way better than people think. Don't let my 11 ball high run in 14.1, or my choking on the 7ball(not the 8 or 9) all the time fool you. People think that's my speed but I really play like John Schmidt.

Yes to both.

Now if you asked; 'are you better or worse than what MOST pool players think about me?"

I would have to say I am better than what MOST of the players that know me think about how well I can play.

I like what dru said: "worst people think Im good, and better people think Im not"

That kinda sums it up sometimes.

For me, personally, I don't think people think I'm better or worse than what I think of own game For instance, in my straight pool league, I kinda know who I should beat or not, and if a surprise win or loss slips by, everyone else in the pool room states my same sentiments: "You should have beat them" or "yea, you are suppose to win."

And when you start surprising people with victories over the better players - that shows your game is getting better. :)

Most people have me clocked on how I used to play or at least at top speed. It sucks but it is the way it is. It also sucks to get older, play way less and see way worse than I once did. Oh well. Just happy to be healthy and still playing at all. Man, I am way too young to sound so old.

I accidently overheard a very good local player say about me, "When you play him, you never know what you're gonna get. Sometimes you get him, he plays terrible. Other times you get him he plays like a champion."

I guess that pretty much makes me both better and worse than what other people think.

Which is actually just fine. :D
