About a month and a half ago I pretty much rebuilt my entire shooting style from the ground up. For the most part, the gains have far surpassed the occasional missed shot or bad position. My best game is definitely better then my old style best game, but at the same time, my worst game is worse then my old style. Last night was absolutely brutal however.
I was playing against 2 guys that I normally don't have a problem with and on average I should have taken 5 to 6 games out of 8 from them if we are all playing average (8-ball). Last night, they were not shooting well at all and given the chances I got at the table, winning 7 or even 8 should have been a possibility if not the likely outcome. They were more shocked then I was at how badly I played.
What seemed to cost me was not shooting as aggressively as I should have. I planned the runs and knew I would have to shoot an aggressive shot in order to get good position on a tricky ball or on the 8, but when I got to the point where it was time to shoot the key shot, I ended up shooting too softly and hooking myself or ending up so far out of line that getting out was no longer a possibility. There were just too many games last night where I walked away from the table with 1 or 2 balls left on the table and while these guys might not be the strongest players in the world, they know enough to play safe when they need to. It was like I played fine most of the time, but when the game was on the line, I suddenly turned timid and didn?t shoot the shot the way I knew it had to be shot.
I don't feel like I need or should take a break, but that's what some people have been suggesting. I personally just feel like I need to spend a couple 8 to 12 hour sessions at the practice table to iron out the wrinkles in my new style, but it's not easy to find large blocks of time like that. I'm hoping to be able to do that this sunday
What do you guys think about taking breaks while your game is in a transitional phase?
Of course, tonight is the weak league that they want to kick me off of, I?ll probably shoot like a god tonight.
