Ash vs Maple -attributes

I searched the forum for Ash vs Maple shafts but did not get a 'hit' and also just ash and just maple shafts but again no 'hit'.

I apologize in advance if this subject has been beaten to death but I would like to know the merits of ash or maple as a cue shaft.

My thinking would be that maple would not be as flexible and that ash might feel a little softer when hit but this is supposition on my part or is there a noticeable difference in each?

can someone help me with my 'cue education'

Thing is Seb when you bash a seal pup on the bonce with a 20 oz ash cue the blood sorta stains the grain whereas it's easier to remove from maple. For your secondary use i suggest steamed swiss pear, being pink the pups blood is hardly noticable. :D

Seriously though the subject has been battered to death far more than any cull to date. Some will say one thing others will say the exact opposite IMO the only real difference is the visible grain factor, as either wood will produce a whippy or a stiff cue. Cant say you'll find many 20 oncers with a bigish tip (10mm +)that are whippy though in either.

Thanks for the offer but when I buy I will get a 20 oz cue

No problemo, I had to make a plug for this cue :duck:

I don't think you'll find an Ash cue that is 20 oz unless it has been cored.....seems to be a pretty light wood!? I believe this cue was made for a billiards player :smile-square:

I like the heavier weight, I think I cue more accurately and find it easier to lighten up the hit when necessary. My golf game sucks but I do better with heavier irons and stiff shafts so it is a carry over I guess. To heck with the pups I'll go for the adult in hopes of a coat:D

Wity- I was going to PM you for advice on this cue that I just bought on eBay UK but the auction was ending too soon. I hope your countryman did not sell me a 'pig in a bag'. The cost of this was only a couple of $ more than a 'pretty' Elite at 38GBP delivered. I hope it will not be too much of a handicap for a guest to use.

As far as a 20 oz cue I am going to give myself an early Christmas present and order an OMIN hand spliced cue 10 mm tip, 60 inches long 20 oz weight hand spliced gaboon into ash with a mini butt (blood stained ash should look good in the wall rack:D). Also that 60" reach should give me some defence against an angry mother seal:thumbup:

Here is what I just bought:

PERADON AND FLETCHER SNOOKER CUE. 'THE MATCH CUE'
IN NEAR MINT CONDITION
2-PIECE
58 AND 1/4" LONG
EXCELLENT QUALITY AND GOOD CONDITION
SUPPLIED WITH SOFT RILEY CASE (it is in a hard casenot a soft one)
ry%3D400

sorry for the poor picture but after I won the auction I 'lifted' it from the ebay listing

UK seller reneged on the sale. Said his international shipping was only for Europe not the US:frown:

So much or UK Flea Bay:angry:

ash vs maple

i hear that nearly all top snooker players use ash....except for Hendry, who i think is is the top prize $$,$$$,$$$,$$$ winner of all time in all cue sports. I don't bet, but if i did i would bet that his maple cue hits ok. i like the idea that snooker players have not been as hung up on inlay etc as pool players. i play a plain maple mcdermott pool cue with an 11mm shaft made of an acrylic impregnated wood laminate marketed as "diamondwood". way stiffer and denser material than ash or maple. according to the lumber industry specs, maple and ash are about the same density. this shaft is made by a good nashville cue maker named Alex Brick. for my modest abilities it works ok for both snooker & pool. it has a euro taper as opposed to the us pro taper, or snooker cone shape. i doubt this taper would work too well in 11mm with a pro taper in normal wood, but with this very stiff heavy hitech "wood" it feels good. i doubt this material would work well for a snooker taper either. wonder if the snooker pros could break out of the rut of running only 147 if they tried a cue with this material. maybe the 9 to 10mm cues the pros use are really about 11 counting the mushroom tip some of them like. by the way Alex charges about $100 & UP us to make a plain shaft, but there is a long wait of about 3 days. he did not seem interested in making a snooker taper though. i have a normal 3/4 ash snooker cue and i like this hybrid better. i like being able to adjust the weight to suit me and i like the linen wrap. but then again i have spent much more time on pool than snooker.

"UK seller reneged on the sale."

Consider yourself lucky Seb. it was a piece of old tat anyways.
Google it and you'll find a thread on the snooker forum where a guy initially was cussing as he'd just missed out on the same cue and case a couple of years ago, followed by a post of another guy who said he'd been watching it with interest too as he bought the same cue a few weeks before for £0.99p

What you want a two piece and a case for anyways? You were after a couple of house cues.
