Asians and Large Shafts???

I have seen many references to this and the biggest one being the predator fat shaft.

Why do so many asians prefer fatter shafts? There hands are not any bigger than ours, thats for sure! Do a few top players play with fatties?

whats the deal, can someone please elaborate?

Us Asians rike compensate for rack of certain things. Besides, fat shafts go great with flied lice. :grin-square: :grin-square: :grin-square:

the majority of the overseas asian market seems to lean towards thicker shafts, 13-14mm while U.S. players are in the 12.5-13mm range.

Example: Predator uses 12.75mm on there 314* shaft. They just recently made a predator fat that is 13mm(i think) to cater to the overseas market such as china etc.

If you use a 13mm or larger shaft what would be the need for it to be a Predator shaft? I thought the concept behind the Predator shaft was developed to take the whip out of the smaller diameter shafts. Maybe I am wrong. Can someone explain?

The predator was designed to reduce deflection.

the maximum is 13.5mm. The reason is that you will not put unnecessary unintended english when shooting a ball. Hence shot becomes more sharper.

this makes perfect sense, it reminds me of when i was playing with a 13.15mm....it kinda makes me wanna go back to thicker shafts and make less mistakes!

Is deflection not reduced by taking the whip or whippiness out of the shaft?

In other words if I had a 17mm standard shaft and a 12.75 mm predator shaft would the predator have less deflection than the 17mm shaft?

The reduced weight in the front end of the shaft is what reduces deflection. Use a fatter shaft that weighs more in the front end, and it will deflect more. The less eccentric your tip position is at contact, the less deflection you'll get for any given shaft at a given speed.

the predator shaft was made for less cue deflection as stated before. As davis just stated predator does this by pretty much hollowing out the front end of the cue.

smaller tips like snooker cues do have less deflection. i am not a physicist so i cannot tell you how..you will just have to believe me :D
 
Is it just me, or does every shaft forum in this question magically morph into yet another deflection thread? LOL

I'm Asian-American and I like my shafts smaller than 13mm, but all of my international student friends like them as fat as they come. NO it is not some intrinsic racial difference that causes people of Asian descent to like fatter shafts, it's almost definitely just a cultural difference.

yes, every damn thread turns into a laminated shaft or deflection thread it seems :grin-square:

of course its a cultural difference! i wanna know why!

i think icem3n has shed the most light on it and i can totally agree with that train of thought as i played with a 13.25mm mcdermott back in the day and my lines were much more simple when playing with that fatter shaft and relying less on the power of spin.

I, for one, would be very interested in what your friends have to say about their choice of shaft diameter. I can't give any credence to this "cultural" sell out from a race standpoint - that's just silly & probably rude. My bet, based on the advanced teaching/student environment that seems apparent in the East & Europe today, is that the Eastern "school of thought" has leaned toward the bigger diameter - possibly exactly to rein in tip position eccentricity, and that this "education culture" is the source of the trend.
I'd also be interested to know if this trend has perpetuated into the ranks of the extraordinary artistic cueists in the region.

What is rude about cultural differences? Considering something as a cultural difference is not in any way judging or degrading.

A simple sample: While most western cultures consider the 13 an unlucky number, the chinese people consider the 4 as unlucky. This is not in any way degrading, it's just factual and related to cultural differences.
