people, ask me all questions as it relates to the game of 8-ball, and i will try to help. after winning 63, 8-ball amateuer tournaments, skill level 7 in the A.P.A. and a two time MVP in a row, not to mention a high run of 5 break and runs in 8-ball (november of 2001) and breaking and running out a rack on 2001 world champion mika immonen, i feel i am qualified to answer any questions one may have regarding the fine game of 8-ball. let the questions begin.

What happens if I broke and made all the balls except the 8 ball?
What happens if I broke and made all stripes? Can I shoot the 8?

if you break, and all balls are pocketed, except the 8, you must go for the 8-ball. if you break and all the stripes are down, you must go for solids, because you must "CLAIM" a group.

Have you ever tried playing rotation 8 ball, shooting 1-7 or 9-15 in numerical order either in a normal game or as a spot with a player of lesser skills?

Great record. Mika is a formidable adversary to be sure. My hubbie went to that first pro pool school with Mika Immonen, Charlie Williams and Tony Robles. He was an sl7 when he went. Guess what his favorite thing that Mika said was? 'Mercy is a sickness' LOL

Seriously, what shape drills do you recommend for the game?

Laura

yes, i've played 8-ball rotation style, good game, but not practical, for the free world, although i heard that's how they always play 8-ball in the phillipines. as far as drills are concerned, the break, is huge. not quite as big as 9-ball but almost as big. practice, hitting the head ball square in it's nose. note the cue ball reaction. if the cue ball is passing the side pockets comming back towards the breaker, your hitting too much below center. if the cue ball hesitates for a second, then takes off towards the foot corner pockets, your hitting too much above center. moral? stay in the center of the cue ball for the break. next drill, pattern play. take 6 object balls and randomly roll them out on the table. 3 stripes, 2 solids, and the 8-ball. take ball in hand on the stripes. plan each positional shot smartly, and cautiously, see how close you could come to obtaining your original acceptable positional landing zone. and lastly, the "end game" put out the 8-ball and one stripe, fairly near each other, for instance, put the 8-ball on the foot spot, and the stripe towards a corner pocket, but not too near the corner pocket and take ball in hand on the stripe, the goal? play straight in position on the 8ball. you will be suprised, how many times this type of seemingly simple shot, could go wrong, resulting in missed 8-ball shots. stay down, follow through, and think positive. keep those questions comming!

Are you going to Vegas for the VNEA event or the Reno open afterwards? Did you say that you live in NYC, if so would you reccomend it as a good base in the US to play 8 Ball / 9 ball from?

PS
In the BCA team event last year I ran out first visit 25 frames out of 30, in two frames I didn't get a shot, in two other frames I missed the black and one frame was scrappy - probably my greatest run of finishes.

If someone breaks and nothing goes down do I have the following option? Can I hit the 8 ball (first) and call a combo on another ball(high or low) make it and keep on shooting the companion balls to the choice I've selected.I seem to remember this sitiuation coming up in a VNEA league game and I think it was legal. Is it legal in BCA 8 ball and other leagues or is it completley illegal and not an option in any league anywhere?

not going to the vnea, don't travel much, as far as , playing the 8 first, when it's open, never in the apa, i doubt it in the bca. no, it's not kosher to hit the 8 ever, unless your "on" black, as the british say. remember, 8-ball is played differently from town to town!!! so always ask before your tournament, knowing the rules can help you win!

BCA Rule 4.9 (8-BAll) ...."However, when the table is open and the 8-ball is the first ball contacted, it is a foul and no stripe or solid may be scored in favor of the shooter. The shooter loses his turn; the incoming player is awarded cue ball in hand; any balls pocketed remain pocketed; and the incoming player addresses the balls with the table still open...."

Never played VNEA, but every other league I know of has a rule to the effect that "the 8-ball is NEVER neutral."

I just played in a Valley state tourney a few weeks ago and asked a ref if the eight was neutral after the break. He said it was. I know some of the refs don't know what's going on but I'm pretty sure this guy does. I don't have a rule book handy, so does anyone know the correct answer for this? I specifically asked if you got to keep shooting after using the eight first in a combo if the table was open.
