Ask The Cuemaker Topic

Hi joey, i also put glue rings around the cored plug about every one inch or so, about .100 th deep, then stop the lathe and drag about 6 glue rings long ways to the core. letting the single point tool dig in about .100th deep. pull out and hand rotate the cue and repeat for at least 6 times or every 60 degrees. No air, just a good tight fit. soild as all get out....and on center.

Do you use these glues in other parts of the cues construction, I.E. butt sleeve etc.?

no I don't use this glue for the butt sleeve. I use 2 part epoxy for that.
Not nessesary, beings it's so short, but I do scribe the tenon as i do the core.
Long groves and ring groves around the tenon. plenty of glue pockets. Never any rattles, or stuff coming loose. Never.......West system glue, works for me.....

Would knurling the core then putting ring grooves help?

knurling

No, I don't think that would be a good idea. Knurling would tear the woods surface and therefore make the surface weak, and have a few small splinters..[ mash to woods surface]... Just long groves, and circle groves, will be just fine. Been working for me for 30 plus. No rattles, buzzes or whatevers, just solidly built fronts...

Hey, VH, purdy's coming down, july 2 or 3 for a few days and some lessons with repairs and cue construction, why not you come down, and i'll show both you guys how to, and how to, if you like? Maybe you to could show me some of your tricks of the trade? This will be Don's second trip. Come on down, pal...

That would be cool Blud! I'd be honored to be there but unfortunately I'm pretty much tied up with things aside from cues.

I'd like to see your kick-a.. shop sometime soon.
Thank you so much for the invite, glady appreciate it :)

next time?

Hey VH, maybe next time you can make it.

I'm rebuilding most of my machinery at this time, along with building a bunch of new stuff.

Building two new saw/lathes, [one for me the other is sold], two new parts/pocket mills, [ one for me,the other is also sold]and one new parts/pocket/mill with a saw/lathe on it also, and it's sold. Building a new boring machine, for fronts and handles, and multi-purpose center drilling/drilling/boring holes/thread grinding/facing, and sizing of the cues joint, plus I can make joint protectors also with this machine. All in one. This will be new state of the art. Air chuck, turns it self on and off. Just stick the shaft, handle,or butt in the machine, and push a button, and it does all these steps in about 45 seconds, per item.

Will be a little easier on my hands and the arthritis, I have. All parts will come out the same each and every time.
My cost about 25-large, but worth it in the long haul. It will do fronts, shafts, butts and handles. Will cut my time down by 20 minutes per cue. Not a lot, but I can be doing something else, while it's just gettin warmed up. Janice will be running it for me. I will also be making Joint Protctors for whoever, at a reasonable rate.....Keep it running to pay for it.
Never the less, hope to see you soon.

That's a hell of a lot of great stuff you're makin' there... 25G's!!! whoa! =)
But I sure bet worth every penny...

Do you have any pics of that saw lathe? I haven't seen one yet... well at least what I think is yours for doing shafts.

How many passes do you make for your shafts? Doesn't the saw blade put a lot of stress on the wood?

The saw blade puts "no stress" at all on the shaft or butt. If your turning the shaft or butt, at the correct speed and your feed rate is ok, and the blade turning at 3,450 RPM's, no stress. The cuts are around .010 thds.of an inch....

Send your PM e-mail address and i'll forward some pictures to you. The newest one is not complete as yet, but I'll, bet any amount it's perfect. Done simular cutting with a simular machine, just not on it's end. The new saw/lathe takes up only 6 sq.ft. or less of floor space, the old one takes up 21sq.ft....

Go to Bludworth.com and click on pictures of machines. There you will see one that's cutting 4-butts [CNC] at the same time. I'll e-mail you pictures of a 2-headed saw/lathe [mechanical one]. It's the nuts.I cut my shafts a min., of 7 times over several weeks and month's.Not sure how to include pictures here?

Blud,

Saw that machine thaqt cuts 4 shafts on your site... saves a lot of valuable time. It's really good when you have dough and the machinery as well... everythings a hanger!

sure is

Hi VH, Hanger for sure. Took me a long time to gather al these machines and all these ideas. Got two more saw/lathes, one has two heads and mechanical version, the other is also 4-headed, CNC. Both work very well.
prices if you want, call or leave me your number.

Hi VH,

machinery, and good machinery that will last is costly. Most guys don't have ready cash for these items. When they don't, I put them with a leasing company. I sell the machinery to a leasing company, [I still gurrantee the machinery], and they in turn lease it to you for around 60 month's. At the end of the lease, you purchase the [leased machiney] from the leasing company for about $1.00, in most states.
So if your interested in going this route, call me @ 830-232-5991, and I'll fill you in on the details. This goes for anyone else who's interested in my machinery?

Hi Hadj,

This is a good thread.

This thread was meant as it states, "ask the cuemaker"...

This was formed and is meant for quailified cuemakers to answer questions from folks like you.

Only problem is, some guys jump in when they are not qualified to answer questions.

You will just have to steer around them.

[ these guys], They have ever right to post, there opinion's, but to post as if they were cuemakers. NO WAY..... If your not a bonifided cuemaker, you should let all know this, [so folks like you sir], will know the differance, with answers to your questions.

Folks like you, need hands on information, not second hand information, by people who do not even own a shop. Who do you want your information from,
a starter, or a full time bonafided cuemaker?

Experence is the best teacher. How can you learn from someone who only reads and visits other shops, and dosen't have much hands on experence? You can't.

If I can help you in anyway, please feel free to ask, here or at my, Private Mail, contact me at,

bludworth@direcway.com

or call me @ 830-232-5991

thanks and ask away.
