Atlantic City Travel Advice

FATBOY - This is correct. Dad grew up in AC prior to becoming a pilot in WWII; and, even during the depression/prohibition era when he was a kid, he said it was the greatest place to grow-up for a kid and then as a young man graduating high school prior to the war. He said the Boardwalk/Hotel scene was amazing; and, AC truly was "The Jewel of Seas" during those years. - GJ
I vacationed as a kid at AC in the early 1960s and it was still an OK place for families, etc. by the mid 60s it had really started to go down hill- especially the "city" part of Atlantic City. IMO- it has not been a safe place since then. I define safe as a place where a family or a law abiding citizen can venture most hours of the day or night and not have the odds against them of returning home unmolested.

No place is immune from crime, but AC - especially at night in any outdoor, fairly isolated location, the only. reasonably reliable vaccination against being a crime statistic is measured in the caliber of the weapon you, yourself can carry as protection. One reason I do enjoy Florida is that you are allowed to travel anywhere in the state and be equipped to self insure against victimization - and the bad guys know it!

Last year I traveled to the American 14.1 and stayed down at Virginia Beach - on the beach itself. The area was NOT safe at night- there were unsavory characters lurking all over the streets adjacent to the beach area and the boardwalk felt very unsafe after dark. Homeless everywhere, even during the day time hours - better to stay closer to the main pool room where the American 14.1 event is being held - IMO.

Thx, but this bite ''There's one more certainty, but people will cry if I say it'' made this knights armor (thanks for the compliment) do its thing. So, what is your certainty?
I'm glad you said this, speaks loudly to many.....EVERYBODY LOOKS THE SAME. :)

I'm glad your right on all accounts.
Thx Tommy Chong, for your Marisol/moment.

And bye, bye the way, society HATED the BEATLES when they arrived, like those that HATED Elvis, because he shook his hips.

bye

I grew up down in Va Beach and still have family there. I'm curious where you were staying. The town has improved a lot in recent years. The north end has always been pretty nice, and now the south end, near 1st Street and Rudy's Inlet is nice.

Sorry you didn't have a good time. If you're ever down there again, let me know. I'm happy to point you in the direction of some good restaurants etc.

When in AC… if a bum is asking for change/money ask if they have change of $100.

When I’m in the casino I play the change machine… put in a dollar bill get 4 quarters back. I usually break even after a few hours

If the actual beach area of VA. beach has improved a lot, then I shutter to think of what it was like previously. There were homeless street people all over the place, and all kinds of noise at night from the boardwalk area. Open drug usage. Everyone has different standard of acceptable, mine is such that I would not return to that beach area for any reason.

If I had to guess you were somewhere in the middle of the beach. Five blocks either side of 16th Street isn't so great. Somehow that's where a lot of tourism happens, then you get cheesy businesses, then pan handlers, then drugs, then the city decides to do homeless outreach there. They did put an end to the homeless encampment that developed under the pier during the pandemic.

If you have occasion to be back, I'd recommend the north or south ends of the beach. The new Cavalier hotel is really fancy, and the south end near 1st is a little less fancy but still really nice.
