The rookie
Hey guys,
So the business I'm in attracts a lot of overseas casual employment seekers, and I've noticed as I take my staff out to play pool that, everyone is a bit confused by our 'pub' rules here.
I personally play by 'International' rules (ball in hand, hit a rail, call pockets etc. )
but otherwise, these are the general pub rules we play here:
- Challenger pays for the table
- Balls are racked with the 8ball on the foot spot
- coin toss to break
- any balls pocketed on the break is immediately in play. If there are more than one ball which are pocketed on the break, the first ball to pocket is in play.
- all fouls result in the cue ball being placed in the 'kitchen' and must be shot 'forward'. (There's also another question whether you should play 'behind the line' or 'on the line')
-If any ball jumps out of the table, it's spotted back on the foot spot, this can also be on the 8ball.
Now, we get into our 'fouls'.
See, us Aussies are pretty relaxed about everything. I've played games where the only foul is when you scratch... and this can breed all sorts of dirty, advantageous play..(Not to mention all the slops and flukes I've seen go pass me, yet I still accept them as legal shots, followed by a courtesy 'tapping of the table' applaud) But, it's a true test of how gentlemanly you or your opponent are, so really, the fouls can be ignored as you wish. Some people just want to play for fun and not for the table, so you have to ease off as appropriate, because, we're all mates here!
Now, another derivative to the rules we have here is the 'Two shot' rule, and whether it 'carries over' or not. (If you pot a ball on your first shot of the 'two shots' do you still get another shot)
'Two shot' is a very common rule with our UK visitors, I personally won't play 'Two shot' anymore due to the fact that it can be used against you when you play with a scumbag, for example;
You've played a great safety, so your opponent, [instead of taking a decent effort to get out of it] purposely fouls. This means that my safety was for nothing, and this will repeat until I lose my position, why? Well, unless the cue ball is scratched, then it's a 'play on', so no repositioning of the cue ball by hand whatsoever. I've had this happen to me once, and that was the end of 'Mr. Nice guy' ...
Most pub games aren't fussed about hitting a rail after hitting an object ball. This is fine, unless you get another scum bag who won't start to play properly until the balls are scattered, but those people are pretty rare.
Now we get to the 8ball.
Well, we generally don't call pocket on the 8, however, if there's only the 8ball and the cue ball on the table, and if you scratch by any means, you've lost the game.
I know that these rules don't generally mean the whole of Australia, but around my area (Bondi Beach and surrounding), if you just want to have a game with a random local-type Aussie, you'll probably be faced with a very relaxed and casual fun session of Pub Pool.
(Just don't agree to play Two Shot pool or you'll have a bad time lol)
But otherwise, please make the rules clear before someone breaks, I've seen too many fights start at the Pub because the rules weren't set prior to the game commencing.
So that's it so far, do also understand that this is a common generalisation, and may or may not be commonly practised as I personally think.
So, Please do correct me if I'm mistaken, or if there are any other rules to add if I've missed any.
Cheers,
