I called PoolDawg with basically the same question, and this is where they directed me. Personally I like the Sneaky Pete model with the wrap, but I do have both of these cue sticks and like them both. The shaft is glass bonded for endurance, and it also slides through the bridge hand nicely.

If he'd like a low deflection wood shaft the Pure X cues are dam nice for 200 to 300 ish.

Cuetec's AVID line from an engineering, performance and future growth standpoint is head and shoulders above anything in the original poster's price range in my opinion. The AVID shaft plays like a supercharged (more power) 314-2 in my opinion and its extension ready, plus it has the adjustable weight system. Skyler Woodward's game has gone up since he began competing with one.

buy a good shaft...a 314 if you like wood, plenty of carbon options out there. Then spend whatever you have left on a butt, if its all black so be it, at least you have a cue that you can progress with and play your best

If he wants to try carbon fiber, JFlowers/Konlin on Amazon is about $300 for the whole cue. I had one and it was pretty nice. (I did return it because I was too used to the deflection of my Predator that I had been using for 20 years). The nice thing about Amazon is if he doesn't like it, its no strings attached to return it.
I bought a konnlen off Amazon for visitors to use. For the the price, I was amazed at how nice the hit is. 300 for a cue with CF shaft and a nice hit is a bargain.

Looking for recommendations for a decent cue in the $200-$400 range. I bought my older son an ebay era Dale Perry that seemed nicely made and played well for under $200.

We are low to average players at best. My youngest son has played the most and really likes the game. We have a McDermot and a JP that we purchased when we had our GC III built by King Cobra, but now he wants one of his own. I recommend quality of play over aesthetics but doesnt want a plain jain cue either.

I would love some suggestions of used or new that might make sense for him.

Thanks
Todd
Pechauer. Great products at very fair prices and the best customer service in the business if you should ever need it.

This quote is from the Pechauer website...'Carbon shafts are not meant to be used for a Masse shot. Driving a carbon shaft into a pool table slate will eventually break the shaft.'

WTH? I own a Pechauer you with a carbon fiber shaft and it's one of the nicest sticks I own. I'm not sure what driving the cue into the Slate has to do with anything. Who the hell is going to drive the cue into the slate ? It's not like one carbon fiber is that much different than the other that it can't handle normal use.

Don't know if it was suggested but McDermott is a trusted brand as well. A great thing with them is the life time warranty which includes warpage. Good luck in whatever you get.

Not sure if posted this but buy whatever you like. I know guys that can’t play slightly that
have high end cues. Buy whatever you like … it’s all personal taste and what fits the buyer.

I'm sure you know that it's nearly impossible to attempt a masse or jump shot without the tip hitting the bed of the table.

With the above statement being a part of the opening post, I don't think jumping or masse is a concern of theirs at all. I'm an intermediate player and I don't really concern myself with those two actions, I really don't think it is a concern of his.

You asked 'Who the hell is going to drive the cue into the slate? I was answering your question.

Ok, there's no reason to get off topic, the op just wanted to recommendations for a new cue stick, not for jumping or masse. With that in mind, I still recommend the cuetec avid era stick.
