baby powder and talc ?

Vaseline Intensive Care Baby Powder!

I heard baby powder and talc aren't very good for the shaft of your cue....is there any truth to this?

This thread brought back a memory and a laugh, one time me and my brother were in Dallas,Tx at Rusty's Billiards back in the 80's. Calvin was playing Phil Sears some 9-Ball giving up the breaks and the 6 out.

Well Calvin's hands always sweated alot and he used baby powder, just so happen someone had left some Johnson n Johnson vaseline intensive care baby powder near the table where they were playing.

Calvin started using the baby powder, after about six hours of playing someone said when did Rusty get new balls?, Phil had been whining about not making any balls on the break, we all LQQKed at the balls and man they Were Shining like new pennies!

Phil said "Calvin g'damn it, you done waxed the balls on me!" we all broke down in tears laughing so hard!

Those balls were so sticky and clung together so, you couldn't make one on the break if you had been shooting the cue ball out of a cannon.

So if you want to give some weight and really be getting weight, use some "Vaseline Intensive Care" baby powder..makes the balls stick together!

What a funny thread this is turning out to be. Maybe two or three posters addressed the question "do they harm the shaft". What did that person say?,,,that talc has enough grit to wear your shaft down if you use it 2,000,000 times?

Don't overthink it.

I use a lot of powder. I wish my hands didn't perspire the way they do, but they do. I grew up using powder and that's the way I feel comfortable playing. I try to keep as much off the table as I can but sometimes it gets on the table. I can't help it. If it wasn't part of the game. Why did every room I grew up playing in have a despenser.

As far as hurting your shaft. I've used it forever and it hasn't affected my shafts. I do clean them now and then but that's all I do.

I played in a room for several years and the owner hated to see me come in because his tables got powder on them when I played. I asked him one day, "Would you prefer dirty tables or no income." I think he got the message after that.

The rooms I knew growing up didn't have a powder dispenser, they had a chalk cone which was a LOT less messy than baby powder. The cone only effected the players hand and shaft and didn't wind up with a lot of loose powder all over the place. The problem isn't people like you who make an honest effort to keep the powder on their hands and cue, it is all the people how take no care at all.
I used some stuff for a while that was like a hand cream except it had powder suspended in it. I preferred not using it, but the nice thing about it was after you put it on the part of your hand where you bridge it dried up nicely leaving a slippery surface. I think Buddy Hall put it out, you might want to find that.
On the other hand, maybe if I used powder I'd play as well as you... NOT! :)

powder

Nasty stuff. If you must use it you can apply just a small amount and rub it into your skin so it doesnt make a mess everywhere.

I have seen whole hand prints on a pool table from people overusing the stuff.I am guessing that it is probably not very good to breath the stuff either.

I have never been tempted to try the stuff since I learned how to keep my cue and hands clean.

Silicone Spray

If you really want a slick shaft, spray your shaft down lightly with silicone spray, it will dry in about 30 seconds and stay super slick for hours with no mess!

Does talc hurt your shaft?

As many posts as I have read here, I'm confident some smart poster would have provided scientific proof of talc/shaft distruction. My experiences say "no", my shaft is just dandy (so I've been told )

I use talc ONLY when I need it - muggy, warm days, rainy days, or high stress spots when I get a little tense. I carry a mini canister in my case.

I lightly tap it, LIKE SPRINKLING SALT, onto the THREE areas of my bridge hand where the cue passes. I rub it in with my other hand's index finger.

Those that leave talc on the table and the balls, that make OUR playing area look like the Pillsbury DoughBoy got gang-raped, should be SHOT!

:grin-square:

KK9 <--- knows talc useage needn't mess up the conditions

The Lebron James Hustling move!

Is it wrong to fill your hands with a fist full of baby powder, slam them together and throw the rest up in the air over the light and table and then yell to the whole room, "Who wants action?"

Jason,

Please go into a serious pool hall, when it's laden with action, and get a table within the masses, and do this.

Have a friend video and YouTube it for us. That would be very cool to watch. I double dare ya!

KK9 <--- thinks jason might want save some extra talc to put on his sore ass-cheeks after doing this! :sorry:

Keep a talc power pad inside one of those sealable $1 Japanese plastic containers about 2.5"x2.5"x1", has been working great for the past 10 years. I just use a little bit each time before shooting. Mind you, I start off with clean hands, but still don't feel it is slick enough.
