Backer at the Derby

X Breaker

I have a silly question here I need to ask.

A friend of mine is interested in going to the Derby to play some money matches for the first time in his life. He is not a bad player at all but he has never been to the US and he has no idea how much he would need and things like that.

He told me he would feel more comfortable if he can find a backer who would arrange some matches for him and to help him in negotiating weight and things like that.

Basically, he cannot speak any English and he is a very young Chinese kid. He wants to improve his game but he is worried he may get broke.

I am not familiar with the gambling thing at all so any suggestion or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like he just needs someone to shoot some straight lines not a backer. That tournament is huge and the action is as well. He will need a pocket full. Do you not know any of the strong players from the region or the country? If you do stay away from them and you need to find a friend that knows a lot of people who can steer your buddy into a game with a low stake and is not a world beater. You have to know someone who knows people. If you dont my advice is to stay home or get some local action.

No, his name is not Wu.:D

I guess what he needs is a person who knows a lot of people and knows their skill level. My friend is not looking to hustle, he just wants to test his skill and play some money matches.

Thank you.

I know it probably depends on the person, when you say pocket full of cash, how much were you referring to?

Thank you.
It really depends on who he plays. At least a $1,000 and $2,000 for some cushion. Ive never been there myself but I fell weird carrying less than $500 into local pool halls for action. There is going to be a lot of road players there and a lot of gambling pros. Im sure there is also B and C players there that will gamble a little. Maybe a hundred or a couple hundred a set but you'll never know unless you test the waters.

Thank you for everyone's advice. Much appreciated. See, I have no idea about money matches and how things work. I thought someone might make fun of me but as it turns out, you guys have all been very nice, thank you.

Is there anyone there in the Derby who is known to stake players?

My friend is not a bad player. The problem is he does not have too much money since he has to fly from Taiwan and pay his hotel and things like that. So, he is hoping to find someone to back him up or to point him to the right direction, set him up with the right player that sort of things.

Thank you.

He might get more than money broke. With an invite like that he's asking to get his face broke if he gets mixed up with the wrong backers. Just something to think about.

Thats just something that you cant jump into without personally knowing someone or them going on your reputation. I know a few backers and side betters that will be going up there but they are stingy with thier cash just like everyone else. You cant imagine anyone putting your buddy in the box without seeing him shoot and knowing how he shoots for the cash. Especially for the caliber players that are going to be there. Also you will be big fish in a ocean of sharks. If people see that you are rookies to matching up you will get so many moves put on you. If you dont much about gambling than this is not the tournament to start. Just let your buddy play the tournaments. You shouldnt be doing any gambling from what you tell me.

Thank you for the advice. May be that is what we will do than. I can just have him play in the tournament and see how it goes.
The last thing I want him to have is a bad first experience in the US being around the wrong group of people.
You are right, I have no idea about matching up so chances are we will get hustled and probably being put in a bad spot.
Let me think about this.
Thank you.

You won't find any backers in the states.

A. He doesn't speak English.
B. Nobody knows how he plays.

Tell your friend to get to a level where he can beat all of the local players in money matches and then he may find someone interested in staking him to come to the states and gamble (kind of like Reyes). Right now, he has ZERO business here. Odds are he would be broke the first day.

Now those tournaments entry fees are a little pricy but he will learn something out of it and he loses he will lose fair and square instead of being hustled. No problem on the advice man your welcome. Just be careful.

What is your friend's name. I'm sure if any of the posters are in attendance we would be interested to see how he handles himself. I know it probably won't be too hard to pick out a young oriental guy that doesn't speak english but a name wouldn't hurt.

Regarding his level of play he is really not a bad player. Taking everthing into consideration, I think it is probably a better idea to have him come to the US and just play in the tournament and match up using his own money.

Who knows, may be he will win the tournament!

Yea, what's his name? If he's really good, we prolly would have heard of him before....I'm no backer or gambler but if he needs to get around or something I could help, I'm fluent in Mandarin and our home countries aren't too far away from each other.

He is still thinking about whether he should come or not because of all the factors I mentioned before.
I will let you know the details once he decides to come for sure.
Thank you very much.

Thank you for your question. Thank you for your interest in the X Breaker.

We will not have any booth in the Derby because I am sold out now and will have no cue to showcase. But Joe Nielsen and Beads n Billiards are both our authorized dealers and they still have a small quantity of X breaker in stock.

I am sure players attending the DCC such as Matt Krah, Larry Nevel, Brandon Ashcraft will be using the X breakers. If you are interested in trying one out, I can bring mine with me and meet up with you there.

I need to go to Japan on 21 Jan so the time is kind of tight for me. But I really want to come to the Derby and meet more people. Hopefully, I can bring my friend with me from Taiwan. He also breaks with a X breaker.

There will be lots of backers lined up if your buddy can draw the rock 6 inches.
