Bad Beat

I was playing in my first 8-Ball APA tourney outside of Grove City PA about two years ago. I was one game away from being in the money. I was playing a guy who was quite a bit better than me. We were hill-hill.

He plays me safe, and I return the favor, snookering him about one inch behind one of my balls on the bottom rail, about 1/2 diamond from the corner pocket. His only other OB was on the other end of the table, right smack on the head spot, and the 8-Ball was tied up with one of my OB's. near the bottom rail.

The guy shrugs his shoulders, says nice safe, and just smacks cue ball. It goes 4 or 5 rails, knocks in his OB in the side pocket, and whitey goes right down and breaks up the 8 ball cluster leaving him a gimmie to cinch the set.

What bad beats have you guys had.

I've had a few, but what makes yours extra bad is the APA-ness of it. Under any reasonable set of rules you must call your shot and he doesn't get to keep shooting after crapping in a ball. You'd have the benefit of the breakout instead of him. When someone did stuff like this in my old apa league we'd say "you tested positive for APA".

Prolly my worst beat is something like this (the diagram isn't exact, so if it looks like my play here was the wrong shot or impossible or whatever... I maybe positioned stuff incorrectly)

I was frozen to the head rail and had to make a nice shot. I KNOW the table rolls off so I cannot baby it in for position on the ball on the foot rail. I must shoot firm. I can see several balls I can run into that will stop the cue ball and leave me a reasonable shot on that ball. But there's also fear that the natural angle will carry me to the side rail and then behind one of those balls. So I also add good inside spin. It all works great and I head towards that group of balls thinking "awesome, I'm gonna nudge one of those and end up with a decent shot". Then the insane happens and the CB goes between them and scratches at a sharp angle into the side. I couldn't do it on purpose with a thousand tries.

I was playing in a 9-ball tournament, race to 5. I'm an APA SL 7 in 9-ball. My opponent was a very bad 3 when he played in the APA, and rarely ever won a match. I lost 1 game in the race to 5 because I gave ball in hand with just the 8 and 9 left. In every other shot of every other game when it was he shot, all he would do was bang the 9. He ended up lucking the 9-ball in 4 times during the match and knocking me out of the tournament.

Good beat

I'm playing a guy races to 7 for $25 and we are hill hill on the final set. If I win this one I am even. I am playing well and get perfect shape on the 6 except I am 1/2 inch off the rail and I have to jack up to get shape on the 7. I hate jacking up. I hit the 6 so bad it misses the corner completely and goes 2 rails in the side. Perfect shape on the 7 and I'm even. All rolls aren't bad ones.
