How do you handle bad losers?

Some of them are very nice chaps away from the table, but turn into monsters as they face defeat.

You can find cases, cues, and broken parts of both items on the roofs of most pool halls. At one time or another all players get upset after losing, it is just how they handle the loss that makes the difference.

I have found that a polite smile and silence work well. We have a couple FLA players that get real upset. One of the top rated players here tries to go on the offense and will instantly want to play $500 sets. He will offer the last 3 or 4 to whomever beat him in haste. Last time he did that I watched him dump $2K in less than an hour. And I have seen him make much worse games in that case before.

I have allways worked too hard to pay for cues and cases, so breaking them is out. I can't get mad at the other player that won because I only have myself to blame for mistakes that I made at the table.

Pool was invented as a 1 person against 1 person sport, not teams. That is what makes the game so good. The only person that can beat you is yourself(unless someone snaps off a set from the jump) and there are no others to blame for losses. You really can't complain about bad rails, rolls, or other equipment problems because you are both playing on the same equipment. But some people are born bad losers and the rest of us can just smile as they make asses out of themselves :)

last night i was playing in the first table of my favorite pool halls, it is where more skilled players play...one time, me and my friend saw that there was no one playing there so i told him lets play there, while we were in the middle of our game, the hustlers came in one by one, eventually, i won over my friend and one of them challenged me, of course i accepted it, well, i dunno, must be beginner's luck on the first table, i won my first match, so he was replaced by another, i dunno...im getting lucky as the balls go down, we were exchanging misses and safeties early on, we were playing rotation btw. the other player misses the 9-ball and ill be having no problems running out the rest of the balls, of course it wasnt my first pocket...and the cycle goes on...my friends were cheering for me since i have played against all of the 7 players who came and won against them, it was around 1:30 in the afternoon when i started playing in the first table, it was around 2:30 when i noticed i was in deep freeze zone...:D and when i started to think i was winning hell of a lot...i started to get nervous...and eventually lost to one of the players i have defeated earlier...
well, since it was my first time there, and i also suffered my first loss on that table after playing 7 games, they welcomed me warmly praising some of my shots (combinations, bank shots, double shots...things like those)
i just told them i got lucky, and when i lost my luck run out...just gave them a nice smile and said...is it ok if ill play again here? they just laughed and told me, of course champ! hehe, of course that was a joke, because i defeated all of them they called me a champ that time...
im lucky that there are a few sore losers here in our place, and
just remember that when u lose, just put up a natural smile and show sportsmanship :)

ey sputnik, i also live in metro manila, in makati particularly, but i study in mapua institute of technology, intramuros, manila. where are you from? where do you usually play? :)

lol fl! i like it when i play against someone i dunno...hehehe.
sputnik...are you still studying or something? i usually play in pool halls around our school, but i play pool sometimes on superbowl...:)

Red Aurbach (former coach of the Boston Celtics), not sure about the spelling, said something like, "show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser." There is an old saying, "Don't show your money or your ass in public." I think demonstrating to everyone you're a sore loser refers to the latter of the two.

As if bad losers aren't enough, what about bad Winners ? I was in a little bar on Pensacola Beach around 1981 or '82 named Dirty Joe's and pretty well 'lit' (like everyone else there). I was playing pool on the coin table with one of the 'locals' and beating him EVERY game. After each game, he would ask me to play for money and I would refuse I'd been there on the beach for about a month and had caught his 'act' from the bar. ( He would challenge the tourists to a money game and when the tourist got down to the 8-ball or the ball just before the 8, this goofball would walk through the swinging doors into the Pizza side of the establishment and sneak out the door WITHOUT paying off. The barmaid or one of his friends would let him know when the tourist had left and he would return)..
So,for 5 or 6 games he kept asking me to play for money and I would refuse. At the end of the 7th game, I leaned out across the table to shoot the eightball and this guy WHACKED me across the forehead with the butt of his house cue. Blood sprayed EVERYWHERE. I grabbed the guy and RAN him across the floor in a headlock and banged him into the concrete wall. Then, I banged him into the wall another 5 or 6 times for good measure and then punched him in the face on his way to the floor. The police came and hauled him away (to the hospital and then to jail). The barmaid tied a towel around my head to stem the flow of blood and the 'next' person that had quarters up on the table asked me to play for $5.
I said SURE and won about $50 before last call...
(my, oh my, how I DO go on).... NEXT !
