You are right CC with this exception. They made, I think 30, new ones without the signature. One was just on E-bay with a buy it now of $760. The bid only got to $205 the first time and when he relisted it it went to $250. Obviously no interest. They have a special name for them which I don't remember.
I have an original, played with it for years. It is now in a safe deposit box in a bank vault. I go see my baby now and then. The Helmstetter remakes of it were nice, not bad. Really nice balance, sort of forward but not too much. You could not feel the weight which was good. It was a very nice striaght pool cue and the GB 7's are beautiful.
I have a couple of the originals that came out I think in 92-93, they were strong. Every year this cue seemed to go down in quality. I gave a few away as favors, I think I still have 2 or 3 that are new that are 97's which are better that the 04's.
This in my opinion is a fine cue to own and to play with, very fine. I have a very strong opinion of Dick Helstetter and his golf clubs and pool cues. The cue is made in Japan by him. It is quality. It is sold by competition games and the problem is the list on the GB-7 is $800 and nobody wants to pay that. These cues are very hard to move at that price.
Can you believe an offer at $200 for a cue wortht over a thousand. Welcome to ebay, a great place to try and steal a cue from a starving vendor, a lousy place to try and sell one for a profit.
Saying this cue is a tomato stake, that's not fair. It is a fine cue people. If you ever spent a couple of days playing with one you would agree with this.
I don't see the problem, no originals are available and when one comes up few can cough up 20 grand for one now, so what's the problem with owning a copy, even if the copy is well, a fancy version of what George really made.
They did buy the rights to copy the cue and reproduce the signature so everything is on the up and up here. The copies are signed by George, originals were not.
