Balance points on cues

I have noticed that most production cues are balanced at around 16-17" and most customs are from 18-20". Why is this, is it because beginners cues are balanced more toward the rear, like a house cue? I like a cue with a 17" balance point from the buttcap, and the cues I have with the 19" balance point I have to hold almost to the end of the buttcap for it to feel right. Why is this?

Custom cues are usally created to the specs of the cue maker. Certain makers have a system that they build there cues by and unless the the purchaser request the balance point to be in a certain area the maker follows his system. If you want a balance point in a custom cue that you are having made for yourself then be sure to let the builder know so that he can shift the point of balance for you.

I haven't noticed this. Ever. And I measure all of my balance points.

I used to be all into knowing balance points and if it has a weight bolt etc. Not any more....I could care less about weight, balance, construction......I just pick it up and hit balls! I like it or not, simple. After years of buying "custom" cues and production cues, I've been disappointed by both. My playing cue now is A Production Lucasi that has a very sweet hit IMO. Last year I sold off "customs" that hit like....well.....I didn't like the hit, but the guys that bought them LOVED it?!

It's tough to ask someone what a good hit is, because its like asking someone else how you will like the fit of Your underwear!!:D....you just gotta try em on yourself!

Agreed, 16-17" balance would be big time butt heavy. Don't know how you could play with a cue like that. Makes my arm tired thinking about it.
