Ball Bangers! wish they'd try to learn to shoot.

Well, a psychologist I'm not, however it sounds as if your friend is just shooting for fun and you are shooting to win. You are much more serious about your game than he is. Consider this, one time when you and he are playing say, "I'm gonna try your method" and just start bangin' 'em. After a couple or three games like this one of two things will happen. Either he will see how foolish this method is and try to change or, you will both be rollin' with laughter and really have a good time playing silly pool. If the first happens perhaps your friend will open up to accepting some advice and become more serious in his approach. If the second happens you must accept that he is not going/wanting to change. If that is the case I suggest you play with you friend only for fun and seek out more serious players when you want to get down to business. Honestly, I think it will be the second option.

Yo pel, I swear I am coming down soon to have that mullet dinner. Tell these boys, that us ball bangers need love too. All these amateurs trying to copy and play like TV pros are doomed, they can't see that. They are not good enough or cant spend the time to learn to play that game. The only chance many of them have to to ride the 9. Oh vey, most can't see this. Book me into the Malaga Inn and fire up the grill, I am coming soon.

I hate these type of players also, but even worse are the ones that are slow, the ones that over look the table for an hour then take their shot and miss. The best way to beat these type of players is to not let them shoot. hehehe. Cole 'TheConArtist'

my favorite are the ones that actually act like it was intentional when it goes 6 rails into the side... :D

or...like the guy i was playing last night...if ever i fouled...no matter what the lay of the land was and how low a percentage shot the 9 was he was smacking away! hahaha it was too funny

and how about this? he shot at a pretty straight 7-9 combo...(i woulda just run out b/c it was easy w/ only 3 balls but anyway...) he misses the original pocket and makes an awesome one pocket bank shot cross corner and struts off and puts up his win...man i just laugh and laugh...

or even this...smack a shot...blow a easy out on an easy lay and leave you pinned on another ball and acting like that's what they meant to do...hahahaha "just what i wanted"

the only thing is...this is who i play w/ and he seems content w/ banging balls around...i want some real competition really trying to be good...i will be honest...at times i just cant get into playing games w/ him... :p

Well just maybe some people play so good that when they slam a ball 5 rails and it goes in a pocket that they meant that! I play so good that I choose not to shoot a ball directly in the hole. I bank every shot at least 3 rails. I even play 5 or 6 rails safeties. You think I got lucky after slamming a ball at break speed and you wind up in jail behind another ball? Hah!

LOL j/k

Right now I am trying to get out of this phase where I get angry when someone gets extremely lucky. I used to be able to just brush it off, but recently I've been letting my temper get the best of my game. I play a tournament once a week and I had been winning it and placing in the money often as an A minus. The last three tournaments I lost in the first or second rounds after mentally breaking down because my opponents won a few games by luck. Say for example my opponent slams at the one ball and it goes 5 rails and knocks the 9 in. Suddenly they are up 3 or 4 games to nil because I'm spotting them 2 or 3 games. Instead of letting that go and regaining my focus I was REALLY getting angry and would start sulking over my opponent's dumb luck. I think the reason why I've been getting like this is because I probably developed a stupid ego after almost always cashing in. I talked to my friend about this, and he gave me good advice. He told me to stop getting angry by striving for perfection instead of blaming it on luck. This makes alot of sense, because lets say I scratch on the break and some D player lucks in 3 9 balls in a row. Instead of going crazy because of the incredible luck, say to yourself "I shouldn't have scratched on the break".

So I think the best thing you can do is to not blame luck when the ball bangers get lucky, but instead realize that the mistakes you made are what gave the ball bangers the opportunities to get those lucky shots. Also try to stay in the frame of mind where a missed shot or a scratch on the break is SUPPOSED to cost you the game when you are playing against professionals. Try to imagine the ball banger as a professional and don't miss.

everyone started as a banger, remember that.

also remember that some people don't share your interest in the game. you don't share their interests, and i'm sure you're a "banger" at something they are interested in.

i personally don't play people like this for free anymore. thats just the way i deal with it, and everyone is happy.

also, remember, in ALOT of poolplayer's eyes, you are still a "banger" yourself.

thanks

that is a great idea! that is how i have to look at it...if i miss and i get another shot even if it's hidden i'll consider myself lucky!!! so instead of thinking of playing a ball banger i'll be playing a champion! i also tried not watching him shoot...it just mad me so mad watching a scratch on the break and him lining up a crazy 1-9 combo make it or miss it it will be just a retarded shot.

yeah i was a banger when i first picked up a cue almost a year ago to the day but i would say that i have atleast learned the game and have an idea of the game and how to get around the table...but again...we started at the same time...maybe his ball banging days are just longer lasting...and he always smacks the balls 3 rails and says "im getting good!" when it goes in to an unintentional pocket...maybe i could be wrong but it's only in 9 ball that he wins ANY games...any game that has designated pockets on it's game over...in onepocket my first time playing he had played quite a bit i beat him 15-0! at one point it was 8-3 and he fouled his 3 and i got em. haha

i wouldnt consider myself a banger and i dont believe most would...maybe i aint good but atleast im trying to look at 3 shots ahead in my thought process and have an idea of how to get there...i may or may not accomplish that but atleast i have an idea....

besides...when i hit a ball it doesnt have enough JUICE on it to go 3 rails...if i have to hit it FIRM it's because it's what i had in mind to do to get to my next shot...not b/c i hit EVERY shot firm...

i might not make all of my shots but i aint just smacking balls around...

The easiest thing would be to play the table each and every time you step up to it. Playing a ballbanger the table will be constantly changing (think of it as great practice for mapping runouts). If you sit and watch the table when a ballbanger is shooting you're going to get angry because just when you figure you've figured out all the patterns, the whole table layout changes.

yes that is annoying but i kinda remap the table after each shot of my own...just to stay 3 balls ahead...but it is one of those things where a no problem ball table turns into a nightmare but that's ok too b/c it gives me a chance to break up balls...
i run out at about a .03% so im not saying runout...but ATLEAST try to run out and get better.

Why are some here knocking ball bangers? Personally, I want more of them coming into the game...lots more...and then more after that...and then some more...

I'm betting that everyone here was, at one time, a ball banger. Imagine if you were treated with the same shit then as exist on this thread now. Would you have felt that pool was something you would want to continue to play? I doubt it.

Let us help the bangers become players. The benefits are great; the costs low. The only difference between them and a better player is that the bangers are at an earlier stage in the process of becoming a player. More developing players = more of everything good for pool.

I agree Jeff. Nothing proves this more than in league play. In order to put a team together(APA) you need ball bangers. It is also a very satisfying feeling when you tutor a SL3 and watch them become a solid 5 speed within a year or two.

jeff, no im not saying that...maybe i should change what the title said...im just saying that this particular player is content w/ it...i cant see him ever breaking and running out...his object is to smack the 9 ball no matter what...

i wish 9ball wasnt the game of choice...straight pool is a MUCH better game. jmho

im not donating my money/time to someone to just rob me...it isnt happening...i'll pay for lessons before i do that...

now if i was playing for something cheap and had a chance or even if i didnt have a chance i would do it if that person was helping me or giving tips/advise...

i can watch the pros shoot on espn2 if i want to see how it's supposed to be done.

i play a gentleman around my way (LK) all the time...he actually helps me when we play, he's a cool guy and sometimes we play long sets for cheap and sometimes w/ NO SPOT...everyone knows he is going to win but i try to win as much as i can to keep it long...sometimes he plays for free but i dont mind DONATING b/c he does help, and as far as i can tell his the best in these parts...

so in that case im not getting robbed...im paying for a lesson...big difference...

ok.......and what would be the difference in playing me? i dont mind giving any weight, but i'm not going to give you the stone cold nuts like you're asking for.

i've only been playing a few months longer than you, but there's a reason i'm 2-3 balls ahead of your speed.......alot of that reason has to do with sucking it up and just playing the better players..........

you can't have your cake and eat it too.......you wanna get good, its gonna cost you.

VAP

you might not know it, but playing cheap sets and getting your ass kicked is a lesson.........even if the other player doesn't even say a word to you. just pay attention......its some of the best lessons you'll ever get.
